I hate writing these types of blogs, but it’s part of it. It’s really not THAT big of a deal, but there were some feelings that came rushing back last night watching the Cubs blow that game to the Mets. What happens when the past becomes the present?
I’ll say it. It was the worst loss of the season. Not only did we blow a 3-0 lead, but it was against the team that sent us home last year in the NLCS. It was against a team we may meet again this year in the postseason. Now this didn’t take us off the track, but it still hurt. I haven’t felt like that in a while.
I think… this is a 4 game series. I remember… they beat us 4 straight last October. Could this happen again?
What went wrong yesterday? Well, the bullpen… again. This time it was newbie Peralta that coughed it up, with the help of a bad Baez to Bryant throw. After making it 3-1, the Mets scored 3 in the 7th to take the lead. That wasn’t the worst of it though… We had our chances.

With 1st and 2nd and 2 outs, he was brought off the bench to pinch hit. His broken bat went farther then the ground ball he hit back to the pitcher. I said this guy was overrated, yet I do understand the Cubs were paying for projected future performance. I like that concept… paying for what you’re going to get, not what has already been done. But… how do you know what we’re getting? It hasn’t been a good return on investment so far, but I’m not mailing it in. Remember Jon Lester…
So we blew the lead, then blew our chance in the 8th. The 9th inning brought the worst of it. 2nd and 3rd, with nobody out… and Kris Bryant at the plate!!! We had them dead to rights. Their overrated closer with his long streak of saves… had his ass on the ropes. We were going to pull this game out! Nope. Bryant struck out. That’s OK, Rizzo is next…. walked him. Contreras failed to bring the runner home with one out, and Baez ended the game. Left them loaded, and lost by 1… another close loss.
So it was the past rearing its head to the present… but what about the future? I’m not your general paranoid Cubs fan, but I can be… we all have it in us. If I look at last night, and think about this type of game 4 months from now, I see the worst case scenario playing out for our Cubbies. The bullpen failing and the offense not getting the clutch hits. We will be shoring up the bullpen, that’s for sure. We won’t be giving up Kyle, but we’ll get somebody. The offense… you can’t speed up time. We’re young! VERY young! Yes, we do have that experience under our belt, but when it comes down to it, when it comes down to the nitty gritty… that clutch moment… with the season on the line… and we are relying on our awesome young studs…. and they don’t come through?
OK, let’s forget about the past; last year’s NLCS… forget about it. Let’s not worry too much about the future; we will get better… that’s a fact and that makes me feel better. Let’s live in the present and try to stay even keel… don’t get too high… don’t get too low. It’s an internal battle being a Cubs fan. It’s time to get a W to make me feel better. Let’s go boys!

Tough, tough game. Had the lead, had some chances at the end, but could not take advantage of it. Oh well, stuff happens and the Cubs are still the best team in baseball. Tough losses, 1run losses, blowouts, all of the above will happen this regular season. Stay focused on playing winning baseball and winning series. Get ready for the postseason because that is where games like this will really hurt. Past failures will be brought to the present, but I remain confident in the Cubs chances this year…next year is here and no regular season game will destroy that!
GO CUBS GO!!!
