June 29, 2021: Stacking Losses

posted in: Cubs | 0

Whew… losing is NOT fun. The Cubs are at it again this month, stacking losses, adding another after a tough loss to the Brewers on Tuesday night in Wrigley Field North. As the losses mount, the frustrations mount… I don’t know about you, but I start getting more agitated, more pissed after every one… looking to take it out on anybody and everybody. That being said, here we go…

Ian Happ. We can talk about the fly ball I thought he should have had on Monday, or his big strikeout on Tuesday, but in general, my thoughts on Happ, and this isn’t the first time I’ve said this, is that the Cubs should have sold high on him. With the big 4 still waiting for extensions, and IF the plan is to keep all of them, then guys like Happ need to go. He had a good year last year; we should have moved him, and got some value for him. Although, not sure that’s what Jed is in the business of doing… you know, getting value in trades… which leads me right into the next subject: backup catchers.

I did say the Cubs should trade Caratini. Why do we need 2 starting catchers on our roster for one, and two, back to the same point with Happ; we need to cut here and there to keep our big guys… we need to find guys in our pipeline that will take their spot. My problem starts with the fact that Victor was basically a throw in with the Darvish deal; that’s some BS! We could have, should have got some value for Caratini all by himself in a deal; he was FAR from a throw in to a larger deal. OK, Vic is gone… now what? Well, now what has been answered all year, and believe me, it hasn’t been a good answer… any of them. The latest of the bunch… Lobaton, or whatever… guy who hasn’t got a hit since before the pandemic… came up with 2 outs in the 9th on Tuesday. Once I saw him walking up to the plate, I knew the game was over; talk about sapping all the hope out of an AB. KB, Rizzo that bad they couldn’t swing one? These are big games Rossy… but since you chose to bat Ortega in a huge spot on Monday instead of Willson or Rizzo, I guess you stuck to the script, which sucks by the way. And to top that off, Lobaton hurts himself during that last out of the game… fricking embarrassing… Who’s next at the backup catcher position? Maybe you should suit your ass up Rossy…

Finally, Heyward… I always use this disclaimer: I will always be thankful for the rain delay speech, and everything he did to contribute to the 2016 World Series Championship. That being said, he sucks. Seems like a great guy, great defensively most of the time, but on offense… putrid… worth about 1/5 of his contract… seriously. Looking for money to spread around to the boys, look no further than that contract.

Between running out Happ, backup catcher du jour, and Heyward in the starting lineup everyday, and the lack of starting pitching (don’t even get me started on that), it’s easy to find places to direct my frustrations. Bottom line: win a game. Wednesday we’ll hope that Jake takes a sip from that 2015-2016 gatorade bottle and help salvage one; 4 games out sounds a whole lot better than 6… Go Cubs…
