June 29, 2018: Back to the Game

posted in: Cubs | 1

Finally, after 3 cancelled games due to the weather, we were back on schedule Friday night.  No rain this time around, only extremely hot temperatures.  Hot enough to cancel the games?

Well, in some folks’ eyes it was.  One of the teams in our league playing at the same time as us refused to show up.  They called the park asking to reschedule, but they were told no.  They were told it would be a forfeit if they didn’t show.  They didn’t show.

I get it.  You’re worried about your kid and/or the other kids on the team.  It was hot, with the heat index over 100; not even sure what that means.  But the temps were in the 90s.  But 6pm was our game time.  As a parent, you have the right to not bring your kid.  As a coach, I would leave that option open.  As a parent, I still brought my kid to the field on this night.  We were dying to get back on the field after all that rain.

8 other parents made the decision to bring their kids to the park; I was very happy with the turnout.  Our opponent wasn’t so lucky.  4 kids I think showed.  But, since the one team didn’t show, instead of that other team practicing, we told them we’d split them up on our teams and we’ll all play the game.  The split that made the most sense was to combine both their teams against ours.

This year, it wouldn’t matter if all 3 other teams combined to face us.  We’re stacked.  We have the 3 best kids in our age group, including my son of course.  Maybe I haven’t seen every kid play yet…maybe I’m biased.  Maybe I’m still right though.

But that’s not what’s most important at this age group.  It’s teaching the kids to play, building team camaraderie, and having fun.  I always try to check those boxes.  Practice has been and will be limited due to the number of rainouts, so won’t make as much progress there as I did last year.  The team camaraderie is pretty easy.  Trying to have each kid learn each other’s names and doing our team huddles before and after each game is fun; the time they’re all playing around in the dugout is where they probably have the most fun.  But doing well, catching the ball, making a good throw, and hitting the ball has to be enjoyable for the kids too; it is for this coach.  And I make sure to let them know too.

We all survived on this hot evening.  The other coaches wanted to call it after 2 innings, which was fine.  My kids would have played the whole game.  But we were back to the game most importantly.  Kids got to get those uniforms dirty while having a ton of fun.  And yes, when they asked who won, I told them the truth.  2-0 so far.  Saturday morning up next.  It was supposed to be just as hot.

Baseball is played in the summer. Temps are supposed to be hot. I get that some parents choose to keep their kid out of the heat, but come on. At that age, the kids love it…getting sweaty and dirty while playing the game they love and are learning. Keep them hydrated and all will be fine…nothing wrong with some sweating. Glad a bit of a game could finally be played. Rainouts suck. Even better when your team is the stacked one that all other teams have to deal with. Keep the games going with the heat on! GO CUBS GO!!!
