June 29, 2016: David and Goliath

posted in: Cubs | 1

It’s what should happen when one of the best teams in the league meets one of the worst teams in the league:  an ass kicking.  The Cubs dispatched of the last place Reds in a 3 game sweep in Cincinnati.  Next.

It was a fun series, especially coming off a rough week.  We had the Kris Bryant game, followed by the Joe Maddon game if you will… where he was rotating pitchers between left field and the mound during the inning.  Three pitchers actually played left field in that 2nd extra inning game.  Then you had the Baez grand slam late to seal the deal.. not to mention another defensive gem.  In the series finale, you had Rizzo with an inside the park home run (and a defensive gem of his own earlier in the series), and Almora with his first career dinger.  It was a nice series sweep that came at the right time.

Then the Reds hit Kris Bryant… purposely of course.  Those poor bastards.  My friend, who happens to be a Reds fan, texted me:  F the Cubs, it’s time to start beaning them.  I was pissed that Bryant got hit, but laughed at my buddy.  I told him, the sad thing is, there is really no star to hit on the Reds.  It’s a sad state of affairs in Cincy.  Who will be leaving that team next?

They do have some guys who could be interesting adds to teams at the trade deadline.  Bruce has been talked about all year.  Phillips may be able to help some team.  Votto finally got his head out of his ass and is hitting the ball again.  They could all be gone… should be gone.  If the Reds can get a nice haul of prospects for them, maybe they can compete at some point the rest of this decade.  The days of the Big Red Machine are long lost.

It was truly a David and Goliath story this series, except David wasn’t able to overcome the giant that is the Cubs.  The machine rolls on after getting back on track.  Next stop… Queens, NY.

Like I said, it wasn’t as crushing a defeat as a Cubs postseason exit usually is.  It felt like we were paying dues… like we had to experience the painful loss after the exciting win in order to get to that next level… like this was just the start of something.  Well, the dues are paid up; no need for any more experiences.  Our time is now.

As for the Mets, they’re in a dogfight in their division.  The Nats are finally living up to expectations again, and the Marlins have been surprising, as we found out last week.  The Mets have been struggling a bit… it’s the perfect time for this NLCS rematch.

The most hated Met is no longer a Met… we may end up seeing him again in the postseason, but he’ll have on the Nationals uni.  Daniel Murphy will not make me mad this weekend.  It’s time to find another Met to hate…

Or better yet, let’s just do the same thing to the Mets as we did to the Reds.  Let’s kick their ass.  Let’s put a hurting on their postseason chances…as much as you can pre All Star break.  Let’s taste a little bit of that revenge. With the ultimate coming in a postseason series win, we’ll have to settle for this.  I try to watch every Cubs game, but I’ll try a bit harder with this series.  Let’s keep it rolling boys.  Go Cubs!

Cubs sWeep the reds in a monster mismatch. Reds will definitely be sellers at the deadline as they rebuild and try to get back to respectability. Votto is the not same player now that he isnt on roids any more. Bruce and philips can help teams but are not superstars. The Cubs, on the other hand, are loaded with young talent and stars, both of which were on full display during the sWeep. On to ny to meet the mets in a 4 game series…hopefully they dont pay us back for what we did to them in the regular season. Then again, if it ends in the Cubs beating them in the postseason, I will take it! GO CUBS GO!!!
