Both the Cubs and Sox had off days on Monday. What do players do on an off day? What do we do on an off day?
Does anyone take a day off just to take a day off? Most of the times there are reasons behind it. We have a doctor or dentist appointment. We have an event to attend. We want to take part in something that happens during the week that we rarely get to be a part of. Always a reason…never just for the hell of it.
At the very least, we take a day off to run errands. We need to catch up on the day to day stuff that gets behind because of a busy job. If we’re lucky, we get to take care of some of this at work; lucky being the key word. Wouldn’t it be great to take a day off and do absolutely nothing? When is the last time you did that?
Some off days are forced, like this coming Friday. Again, not everybody gets that day off; have to be lucky. If you get the day off, I’m sure there is something already planned. Never a day to do nothing. This is life.

Every once in a while, we need that. What’s your definition of doing nothing? Is it exactly that? Probably not. You’ll probably still end up doing something. I’d want to still get up at 5am, but instead of going to work, I’d go to the 1st hole of an 18 hole golf course. And yeah, I would have a beer at 7 in the morning. After that, it’d be time to for a nap. I’d only nap for about an hour… that’s all I need. Well, not really… I could probably sleep about 24 hours straight, but then that wouldn’t be a good use for my day to do nothing now would it?
Wake up and eat… it’s lunch time. I’m thinking a Lawry’s prime rib sandwich… and yes, there will be a glass of wine accompanying it. Now it’s time to head to the park to play with my son… then dropping off the boy, and heading to a flick with my wife. And as we’re scooping our boy back up, we’re picking up a greasy neighborhood pizza. That’s my “nothing” day.
What do the players do on their off days? I hope they’re not “working”… practicing. Everybody needs a mental break. Everybody needs a true “off day”. Why should we require our teams to work on their off day? Well, maybe because it’s not really work to us. Maybe because they make millions of bucks. Maybe because their work year is busy only 6 months of the year; if they’re lucky, 7 months.
You know what, I’d probably write this blog too… on my “nothing” day. I’d like to ONLY have to worry about that every day, and nothing else. No more 9 to 5… that’s not the way to go, but it is a necessity, at least for the time being. Speaking of that “other” job… it’s time to get back. That was quick… that was a nice little mental break…. going to my happy place. Back to reality. You too! But don’t forget about that happy place, and make it happen once in a while… like NOW!
