The Cubs were all about the split on this latest home stand. Salvaging a split with the Mets in the final game of their 4 game series, the White Sox in our 2 game series, and the Braves on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley. 5-5 home stand is not going to get it done. Yet, heading into the weekend series in Cincinnati, the Cubs still hold a 1 game lead in the division.
The Cubs have been good at home… 2nd best in the NL behind the Dodgers, and 3rd best in the majors behind the Dodgers and Yankees. If we applied that 64% winning clip across all games for an entire season, we’d be at 104 wins. Unfortunately, the road has been where the Cubs have suffered. 6 games under 500 on the road?!?! That’s pathetic. That’s really un-Cub like for this team. Certainly expect that to turn around, and at the bare minimum, be at 500 when it’s all said and done. If the home record can continue at that clip, and we get to 500 on the road, we’d be at 92 wins. Good enough to take the division? Maybe.
The Cubs are currently the worst division leader by winning percentage, which helps make the NL Central, the most closely contested division in baseball. 6.5 games between first and last for the 5 teams. There are 3 other division leaders who are that much clear of the 2nd place team. The Cubs would be in 2nd place in any other NL division, and 3rd place in each of the AL divisions. I always like checking out the standings and breaking them down from time to time. But all that matters is the NL Central… well, that and the wild card if necessary. More division games coming in Cincy starting Friday night.

It didn’t start that way, going down 6-1 with the other half of the fabulous pitching duo the Cubs signed 2 years ago. Chatwood has been better… out of the bullpen… maybe that’s where he belongs. 6 runs usually means big trouble, but not today. The Cubs stormed back, and took the lead. They then held on to win 9-7. There was also a notable debut.
Craig Kimbrel made his season debut, and team debut for the Cubs; same series Dallas Keuchel made his season debut and team debut for the Braves. Crazy that these guys went unsigned for that long. I wonder if something else was going on… like maybe both of them weren’t in a hurry… resting their arms, etc. I’m fine with that. So that means Mr. Kimbrel should be good to go from here on out. Walking into Sweet Child of Mine, Craig got the big ovation. I remember when Chapman came into his first game a few years back; I swear I was at that game. We went nuts, and every time the radar gun hit triple digits, we ooohed and aahhed. Kimbrel doesn’t quite reach that, but 98 isn’t too shabby. Looked like it would be a quiet 9th, before 2 guys got on after 2 outs, which brought the go ahead run to the plate in the form of Freddie Freeman. First pitch swinging, he hit it down to Rizzo, who made a great play to beat him to the bag, by diving and sliding his glove into the bag. We will take it.
Now the Cubs and 1000s of fans will head east for a weekend series that may have to be played between the rain drops. The Reds have been coming on strong, and have been a bit of a nuisance for us lately. Can’t split a 3 game series… (well, you can if one gets PPD). Let’s bring home the series win and start hitting our stride. Go Cubs!!!
