June 27, 2022: The New Boss

The Blackhawks named Luke Richardson the 40th head coach in franchise history. How we feeling about that?

Here’s a list: Tommy Gorman, Bill Stewart, Rudy Pilous, and Joel Quenneville, the 1934, 1938, 1961, and 2010, 2013, and 2015 Stanley Cup head coaches for our Hawks. Honestly, I didn’t know the coaches from the 1st 3 Cups until this very moment. Of course, very familiar with Coach Q. Since he was sent packing, the Blackhawks have went a combined 114-125-36. Of course, Coach Q has the best winning percentage of any of those other 38 Blackhawks coaches; makes total sense why we asked him to leave… Just can’t let it go.

But today is a new day; the new boss is in town. So what’s up with this Luke guy? Looks like he had a long NHL career; one of the Twitter posts I read from the Blackhawks says he’s 10th all time in games played among NHL defenseman (1,417). Wow, just wow! He’s definitely been there done that, which will earn him some sort of respect from the guys right out of the gate, right? Does a coach need to be an ex-player? Do they get more respect? I don’t know… I think it helps. Of course, not just any ex-player can be successful at coaching, no matter how good they were at playing; hoping Luke can be one of those guys that IS successful behind the bench.

Of course, it takes more than just a coach… The Blackhawks roster is not great. Toews should be announcing his retirement soon; Kane may have another couple years left. We have some young guys with some talent, or so I thought, but things haven’t come together; DeBrincat looks great…. what’s up with Kirby Dach? Hagel got moved. Will a new coach help make magic happen with this group? We need to add talent, regardless who the coach is… Our new GM should be working on that as we speak. Hopefully Kyle Davidson and new coach Luke Richardson will have a good working relationship; that’s important.

What’s more important is winning games. I don’t care who the coach is, as long as the Hawks win. The Hawks won under Coach Q btw… I just can’t stop. Mention him or Thibs, and I get pissed all over again. Maybe Luke can be the new Q? He’ll need to work on a mustache though… Either way, we need to give the new guy a chance. As of right now, he’s 0-0; that’s 0-0 for his career… yes, first time head coach here. That’s fun… although everybody starts somewhere. Luke will start in a little less than 4 months. Blackhawks hockey will be back again, as it always is, every year like clockwork. Will they be back in the playoffs though? Hoping Luke can help with that. Go Hawks!
