We’ve been waiting. We’ve been patiently waiting. We know about patience; it’s unlike any other. We were finally rewarded for that patience last year. We rejoiced. We liked how that felt. We wanted more. If we won once, why can’t we do it again? Why not was the question not why. Yes, the Cubs can repeat. We still believe that.
It’s the end of June and it certainly does not feel like this team is on the path to a repeat. The record is mediocre. Our division sucks thankfully. We can certainly still make the playoffs. We will surely start playing better. We’re waiting…waiting for the return of our Cubs.
Similarly, we keep thinking Jake will be back. On Tuesday night in Washington, he was back…on the mound, and, he was back to the Jake we’ve become used to seeing. Far from the dominant Arrieta that we saw for a couple years, is this the real Jake? Just like we keep thinking the Cubs will go on a run after winning a few games, we keep thinking Jake will start pitching like the old Jake after a few good starts. We know about patience. But what if it never happens? What if this is what the 2017 Cubs are? What if this is what Jake is now? When do we come to that conclusion?
The answers to those two questions are closely linked. The Cubs will not be the champs against, at least this year, without Jake being Jake; you know how easy it is to misspell Jake with Kale? The Cubs need their pitching to be great again, and Jake is a big part of that. Lester is needed, as is Hendricks, who is still on the DL. Jake completes that minimum big 3 requirement in the rotation. Only Lester has been what we need him to be thus far.

It points back to the Cubs biggest need, as we’ve discussed many times here. The need to not only add a starter, but to add a top of the rotation guy for THIS year…as soon as possible. The longer the Cubs hang around 500, the more urgent the need becomes. I do trust in Theo.
Yes, the Nationals are a good team; nothing for Jake or the Cubs to hang their head about. It’s the bigger body of work I’m worried about. 7-6 with a 4.67 era. 39-38 almost halfway through the season. Like I said, when do we start reaching conclusions?
Not yet. A half of season is a good body of work no doubt, and yes, this may very well be it, but…it is only half way done. I know, I said “it’s only April”, “it’s only May”; I know I will believe the Cubs will be back in the postseason again until they’re not. If I put my faith in any team, it’s the team that brought me glory as recent as last year. They’ve earned that faith. Will they reward it?
The season marches on; it waits for nobody. Guys will figure it out, or not. Teams will get better, or not. After all, at least there’s no problems in the Cubs clubhouse. Oh wait…

Approaching the halfway point, the Cubs are not what we thought they would be. An average team all year long, hovering around .500. We keep waiting for that run. We keep waiting for guys to turn it around. We keep waiting like we had for 108 years. This may be what the 2017 Cubs are, an average team that never catches fire. Will that be enough to win the division? Possible but not probable. Jake does not look like he will be signed here long term. Yes, he had an amazing run, but this year has been mediocre. He is one of the guys we are waiting to snap out of it. Maybe some will, maybe some wont, but the 2017 Cubs will be a roller coaster ride this summer culminating in what?
GO CUBS GO!!!
