As the wheels touched down, and the plane pulled into the gate, Frank Sinatra’s “My Kind of Town” blared on the speakers. I was home, and I was happy. Walking towards ground transportation, I was met by my son and my wife holding up a sign: “We love you Dad. Welcome Home.” It doesn’t get much better than that. 5 days away from the family was a long time. I hugged and kissed them both.
I can go on about how I missed them, and how FaceTime helped me through, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll talk about what else I missed being out of town: watching MY Cubs. Yes, last we talked I was walking across NYC to find the only Cubs bar in the city. It was great, but it sucked to see them lose… especially after a few beers. Oh well, in 162 games, we will lose some. After a 1-6 week, the Cubs were hoping to get back on track, and I would be home to watch it.
We’ve seen many wins this season, and now some more losses, but what happened on Monday, we have never before seen. Isn’t it cool to see something happen for the first time ever? That’s exactly what happened in the Cubs Reds game on Monday. This was the first time in the history of the MLB that a player hit 3 HRs and 2 doubles in the same game. That’s kind of shocking to me.
There have been a lot of 3 HR games: 558 to be exact. There’s even been a number of 4 HR games: don’t have that exact figure. And what about how many games have there been with 2 doubles? Very, very common occurrence that has happened 39,188 times. But to have 3 HR and 2 doubles in the same game… for that to never, ever have happened…. that’s just crazy. So Kris Bryant had to send his cap to the HOF.. his jersey will be there too one day at this pace.

He is the real deal. For all these hyped prospects over the years… for all these hyped Cubs prospects over the years that bomb out… he is the truth. The man can play 3B and OF without skipping a beat defensively. He can hit the cover off the baseball. Did you see his HRs from Monday’s game? WOW! I know Great American Ball Park is a launching pad, but still… those balls were crushed. This is only his 2nd year in the league, and there has been no sophomore slump… no sign of slowing down. Of course there’s always that injury thing, but aside from that, at this rate, he will be the best Cub of all time… and one of the best MLB players of all time too.
Who else you got in the majors today? Mike “my team can’t get any better because we’re paying Pujols too much money” Trout? Bryce “I complain about getting walked, but continue to take close pitch after close pitch with 2 strikes” Harper? I’ll give you Trout. Miguel Cabrera… getting old. Not sure I would take anybody besides Trout ahead of Bryant right now. Biased? Sure, but tell me… tell me who. And don’t give me Tim Anderson Sox fans… he’s good, but KBoom is on a whole ‘nother level. And we’re not talking pitchers… just hitters. Tell me.
It was the first of many firsts for our boy Bryant. My only hope is that he doesn’t hold a grudge from the whole time and service thing from the beginning of last year. The Cubs will pay this guy whatever he wants when the time comes; just hope he wants to be a Cub forever. Winning a World Series would help that. Speaking about things we’ve never seen before… Let’s Go Cubbies!!!!!
MK
KB, KBoom, white mamba, call him what you want, but this kid is awesome! All 3 home runs were bombs. The 2nd double he legged out like few others try or could. And how classy was he to not want to take a curtain call in cincy, even after a historic game in front of mainly Cubs fans…1st class kid! He is a great defender at many positions, is a smart base runner, and can flat out rake! He can very well go down as the best Cub ever, but he has a lot of baseball left to play, and an ultimate goal we have all been waiting for. Keep that head in a good place KB, the awards, money, and accolades will definitely follow. MVP this year after ROY last year??? Why not, and why not help the Cubs win the whole damn thing while you’re at it! GO CUBS GO!!!
