June 25, 2021: Nice Welcome Home

As our delayed plane landed at Midway on Thursday night, I flipped my phone off Airplane Mode. I checked my text messages, sent a few, then of course, checked in on the Cubs game. I saw they were beating the Dodgers 4-0 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Knowing our bullpen, I felt pretty good about that lead at that point in the game. I was right. Cubs did win 4-0; what a nice welcome home present.

My brother sent me a text right after the game; combined nono. What? Really? I had no idea. How cool is that? It’s crazy that I missed another no hitter in LA. I missed the first one because I was at Ravinia listening to Santana when Jake was spinning his masterpiece back in the day. This one because I was on a plane back from Vegas; it would have been cool to still be in Vegas watching this one develop… Anyways, it was the first combined no hitter in Cubs history. What a great way to start the series in LA. I thought it was funny how some people don’t consider this to be an “official” no hitter.

What is the definition of a no hitter? Not allowing a hit for the entire game, yes? Well, obviously if it takes 1 pitcher or 10 pitchers, if there were no hits the entire game, then that game was a no hitter; seems easy enough to me. But hey, I thought MadBum’s should have counted; it’s not his fault that MLB dictated the length of a doubleheader game to the league. He pitched the entire game and didn’t give up any hits; it should count. If it did count, this Cubs combined no-no would have broke the record for most no-hitters in one year. Since it didn’t count, the Cubs effort tied the record for most no hitters in a single season. Surely this will be broken, right?

Well, now that the sticky stuff is banned… yeah, what’s up with that? I happened to hear Steve Stone on the radio the other day, and I liked what his suggestion was. Make one approved ball gripping substance available to all the pitchers in the league; leave it on the mound with the rosin bag. At that point, use the technology, tracking spin rates, etc, to determine if someone else is cheating. Surely there will be variances in this data across different pitchers, but, if somebody jumps WAY out there, then guess what… they’re probably using some other stuff. Use the technology that is available, vs having the umpires pat down these guys every game. I thought the goal was to make the games shorter? Well, that certainly isn’t helping. It is providing some drama; maybe that’s what MLB feels it needs. I don’t know. It seems like this should be easier to fix than what is currently taking place.

Glad to be home; glad to see the Cubs victory. I had hoped for some more wins in LA… can’t always get what you want right? We’ll check back in with the Cubs in a few; have a couple other things I want to get to first.
