June 25, 2019: Fired Up

Cubs in 1st place… weather finally starting to get nice… 4 game series with the NL East division leader Braves starting on Monday… yeah, I’m fired up.  After all, with the way the Dodgers are running away with things in the NL, if the Cubs and Braves both finish atop their respective divisions, this will be the division series matchup.  Nothing like sending a message early…

The Braves already sent theirs… if you recall the start of the season; personally, I would rather not remember it, the Braves swept the Cubs in the 3 game series in Atlanta.  That was right in the middle of our 7 game losing streak which followed our opening day victory.  That was then, this is now… and October will be October.  I would hope that someone reminded the Cubs of that series in Atlanta earlier this year; maybe they didn’t need a reminder.  When that happens, maybe you can’t wait to play that team again, and issue them a bit of payback.  Well, the first payment was made on Monday in Wrigley.

It was Contreras who sent the ball into the right field basket to give the Cubs the early 1-0 lead.  Talk about fired up… Willson looked back at the catcher, pounded his chest as he looked toward our 1st base coach (and the Braves dugout) as he rounded first, and then started yelling at the catcher as he stepped on home plate.  Everybody got some stretching in, and came onto the field.  Yeah, that was the 2nd inning in the first game of a four game set; have a feeling there will be more to come… and for the Cubs, hopefully that means more winning.  They tried to figure out why Willson was going crazy… they showed the Braves catcher, ex-White Sox Tyler Flowers, saying something to Contreras as he was talking to the umpire about the previous pitch; surely, Willson didn’t appreciate that.  Don’t think you want to mess with Contreras… just saying.

And honestly, don’t think you want to fire up the Cubs.  I didn’t understand it when it happened; it certainly looked like more than what was called for, but after further review, it was perfect.  It’s just what the Cubs needed.  Kind of like the Blackhawks during their Cup runs, especially on the off-Cup years, they seemed to go through the motions at times.  They knew they were talented, and relied on that to carry them through the long season.  Problem was, that a hole was dug; sometimes they did that in the playoffs too.  Just because you have the talent, nothing is guaranteed.  I see that happening with the Cubs too at times during the 162.  Why can’t they score runs?  Why can’t they hit with runners in scoring position?  Why are they just barely scraping runs out?  And then the outburst happens like it did Monday night, where it’s hit after hit after hit… and the runs are pouring in.  Of course everybody goes through ups and downs in the long season, but the Cubs are too talented to go through too many lows.

If someone getting fired up, and starting crap with the opposing team is going to light a fire under our guys, then let’s make this a standard series opening tactic.  You don’t think teams get up to play the Cubs???  All these teams coming into Wrigley, playing in front of crowds that they are not used to… knowing that the Cubs have been in the postseason 4 straight years and counting… yeah, we get teams’ A games.  All that means is that we should give our A game back to them.  A game against A game will turn out in the Cubs favor more times than not.  Not saying they purposely don’t bring it… just saying maybe some of the slumps are due to this going through the motions stuff.

Whatever it was last night, I loved it.  When the Cubs bats are going like that, frankly, we’re unstoppable.  Give me more of that… inject that into my veins… bring it.  Go Cubs!!!
