Going back to Cali… The Cubs headed to the West Coast to face the Dodgers for a 4 game set. Fresh off getting swept in Cincy, the Cubs needed to stop the bleeding.
I love when the Cubs play on the West Coast. I’m not sure how many times I’ve noted this, but it is true. In recent history, I’ve had a hard time staying up for these games. Another nice thing about getting my sleep apnea taken care of is that I can actually stay up for these games. The fact that these games are starting at 9:10pm CST, means that my son is asleep. Would I actually watch the whole game?
The answer on Monday was yes. I actually watched the whole game… every minute of it. Now I’d love to watch every minute of every game, but the reality is, that’s not happening. Rarely do I see a game from start to finish… the whole way. Monday night vs the Dodgers was exactly that.
And of course, they couldn’t score crap. I loved the way the rookie Underwood fought through it out there. First start in the majors, making a start on the road, vs the Dodgers, for the Cubs who are on a 4 game losing streak; yeah, no pressure here. He fought for sure, but he came out pretty good. I’d like to see this kid get another start. As the back end of the rotation is up in the air, why not see what this kid can do. Wouldn’t it be awesome to find a diamond in the rough? To grab someone to be able to contribute in a big way. Maybe he’s not that guy, but after seeing him in his first start, in the toughest of all starts, I definitely would like to see him again.

And I’m sorry, but why the hell was Chris Gimenez starting? OK, experienced catcher with the rookie, yeah, I guess so. But why not Willson? He may have even caught this dude in the minors; not sure, but when Gimenez came up with 2 on and was asked to bunt, my anger was complete. And oh yeah, he bunted up in the air right into a double play. Why not pinch hit Willson there? Joe does it for everybody else in practically any inning.
So the Cubs proceeded to score 0 runs in the first 8 innings. This is what I stayed up to watch. The one damn game I watch every second of, and THIS is what I see. I was pissed. They made it interesting in the 9th, off Jansen of all pitchers, but came up short. 5 game losing streak.
The bats are hurting. Rizzo has been in the tank since his hot May. Bryant is on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Russell has never really gotten going. Contreras hasn’t been that great. Schwarber has been better than last year, but that average is still low. Baez goes through streaks. All these big names, and we can’t score any runs?
Well, I went to bed pissed off. But they’ll be right back at it on Tuesday night. See you then.

It sucks when you get a chance to watch an entire Cubs game, and they lay an egg. Better now than later in the year I guess. The losing streak reaches 5 games. Time for Joe to mix things up and find a way to win a game. A big hit, a solid outing, a clutch save, something needs to happen to shake the streak. 5 games for the Cubs seems like 4 too many. Not worried but just hate losing, especially now to the dodgers. Love the late starts, hate the losing, something has to give. Come on Cubbies, snap the losing! GO CUBS GO!!!
