Thank God Derrick Rose got traded. No, I don’t mean it like that… like I couldn’t wait until he was moved, although at the end of the day, I think it’ll be fine. I mean, it was a nicely timed distraction from baseball.
It’s been all about the Cubs, and rightfully so. It was nice when the Rose trade happened, because it distracted me from the worst week of the season for the Cubs. I was trying to hold off writing about it, but I had to get to it eventually. I was hoping they would be out of their slump by the time I got here… but, didn’t happen.
It all started with the St. Louis sweep. They may have got lucky in Game 1, and Game 2 was a dogfight, but Game 3 they blew us out of the water. It was surprising for sure. It’s a good reminder that we haven’t done shit yet. It’s a good reminder of what could happen when 3 losses could mean our season. However, it’s also a good reminder of how good the Cubs have been. Even after the 3 game sweep, the Cubs still held a 9.5 game lead over the Cards. So for all those happy Cardinal fans, and anybody else hating on the Cubs, I got one word for you… Standings!
Moving on from that sweep by the hated birds, we headed on the road to Miami to face another team that I hate. I don’t really hate this current version, but just mention the team name Marlins, and I cringe. Screw those new to MLB world series title team. Yeah, they’re not so new any more, but they’ve won the World Series already… and it came at our expense. I will NOT relive that moment… not now… not this year. A 4 game set was on tap starting Thursday.

I left the city on Thursday on a business trip; I’d been swamped the first 2.5 days until I finally crashed on the hotel bed. This means I haven’t been seeing much of the games. I’ve kept up with the scores and some highlights (including Baez’ plays… WOW!), but not many details. I think it was the first game that Strop blew, and we won the 2nd. The 3rd game was somewhat of a shootout, with Lackey not pitching too well. So we’ve already lost 2 of 3 down there with Fernandez on the bump Sunday for the Marlins. This coming after a 3 game sweep, and it adds up to losing 5 of 6; this is something we haven’t seen much of this year, but in a 162 game season, it is inevitable.
Yes, we’re currently in one of the downs of the up and down regular season. Don’t panic. We’re banged up too; that’ll happen, hopefully nothing too serious besides the one we already know of. I’m not happy about the losing, and the deviation from our projection to come close to the MLB record for wins in a season, but I’m OK. I still see a comfortable lead in the standings, and think, that’s goal #1 for the season; to win the division. We’re still on track there. I hate losing to the Cardinals, but I do think, that when it counts, we’ll kick their ass again. So, we’re OK.
Going to cross the bridge over to NYC today and watch some of that final Cubs game. I’ll be wearing my Cubs hat proudly, hoping to see the Cubs come out of Miami with a win. It’ll be nice to watch a game again… GO Cubs!!!

Cubs struggling without a doubt, but they still have the best record in baseball as well as a huge division lead. That shows just how great they were playing and will get back to playing. Just a little detour on this 162 game trek. Arrieta and lester to start the series versus the reds should get things rolling…hope the bats wake up, too, and get the Cubbie blue train back on track! GO CUBS GO!!!
