June 24, 2016: The Next Casualty

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

First Teuvo and Bickell, (then DRose), and now, the next casualty, Andrew Shaw.  It sucks losing guys, but as we’ve talked about before, for the Blackhawks, it’s a normal thing.

The last time we talked about the Blackhawks, the subject was shedding season… the shedding continues.  I thought by trading Teuvo and Bickell, we would be able to sign a guy like Shaw.  I don’t like the move at all.  Shaw was the type of guy that you need on every team.  He was the type of guy that the Hawks don’t have many of.  He was a grinder.  He played hard, fought hard, lived in front of the net getting those dirty goals.  He got under the other team’s skin, and gave the Hawks that edge.  We’ve seen guys like that come and go before.

The 2010 team was full of them… another reason why that team was my favorite.  Eager, Burish, Brouwer, Byfuglien… these guys brought the toughness.  They defended our skill guys.  They policed it.  They also got the dirty goals living in front of the net, constantly aggravating the other team.  Shaw is cut from that same cloth, and we just sent him packing.  I wonder how much that penalty late in one of those playoff games this year came into play.  The one that was followed by some comments.  The one that led to the suspension the next game.  Was that a mistake that he couldn’t overcome, or was it just salary cap related?

Coach Q obviously loved the guy… Bowman obviously didn’t.  These two have learned to co-exist pretty well over the years.  It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but when you win, what can you say.  3 Cups means lots of good stuff from everybody, owners, GMs, coaches, and of course, the players.  When you don’t win, it feels like those relationships get strained, and the Bowman Q relationship seems to fall in that category.  I wonder how this latest move will play in that dynamic…

This version was as popular as viagra the pill treatment. Unlike the Bulls, we’ve learned to trust in Stan… again, how can we complain with 3 Cups.  Well, we can complain and will complain about anything and everything… we’re never satisfied.  Secondly, those complaints will continue to grow if the Hawks don’t add to that total.  Remember, this is a dynasty… and that means MORE than 3 Cups.  With the talent on this team, more Cups should be coming.  Although we’ve sure supplied some talent to the rest of the NHL… one of those guys Troy Brouwer came back to directly hurt us in Game 7 this year.  Who’s next?

With all these ex-Hawks out there, it seems like we’ll meet one every other game.  OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but.. somebody needs to put that list together on Twitter.  I want to see all the ex-Hawks playing in the NHL today.  I’m pretty sure, they would make a damn good team by themselves.

We don’t miss them all… we’re not against all the moves, but like Saad last year, I really don’t like this one.  And I think, like Teuvo, did something that happened in this postseason impact the move?  Money is the bottom line, but there are definitely other factors.  What was the other factor with Shaw?  Because if I’m looking at other factors, the ones I mentioned above, he would still be a Blackhawk.

Is that it?  Are we done saying goodbye to the Hawks players this offseason?  We’ve welcomed a bunch through the draft, hope we’re not saying goodbye to too many more.  And by the way, congrats to Bread Man and Kane.  The Rookie of the Year and the MVP play here.  That has to translate to good things going forward, no?  I sure hope so.  We want more Cups!!!  Go Hawks!

Shaw was definitely one of those scrappy guys that you love on your team and hate playing against. Now, the Hawks will find that out. I dont disagree with the move. The Hawks need to build from within, get young, shed salary, and extra draft picks will help get that done. He will definitely be missed and best wishes for him going forward. Glad he went to the east so the Hawks wont see him much. The salary cap crunch continues for this Hawks team, but having the new MVP and rookie of the year is pretty sweet. Kane and Panarin will lead the Hawks and the rest of the core into next year looking to win 4 in 8…GO HAWKS!!!
