We’ve had one famous Kirby with Chicago ties. Yeah, he didn’t play for the Cubs or the Sox, but Kirby Puckett sure made Chicago proud. Great player for the Twins back in the day if you don’t know. But on Friday night, the Blackhawks tried adding to the whole Kirby legacy, drafting Kirby Dach (keeps autocorrecting it to each) with the 3rd pick of the NHL Draft. Here we go again…
They ran something about the best #3 picks in Chicago sports; we’ve got some doozies. MJ of course… him of the 6 titles Bulls; I bet people hated us back in the day. Those were some gloriful times. Butkus came in at number 3; the 2nd half of the greatest 2 picks in a row in NFL draft history with Gale Sayers. And then more relatable to this situation, Captain Serious. Yep, the captain of the 3 time Stanley Cup champions. Like I said, we’ve had some doozies. So already the kid is under the spotlight of the pressure….
Just like the Bulls pick, I don’t know much about these guys. I knew the top 2 consensus picks. I knew we were number 3. After that, I kind of hoped the Hawks traded this pick to get somebody who could be on the ice this year; time is running out for the legends still skating for us. But they kept the pick… I had just read an article about Turcotte; I was convinced the Hawks would draft him. After reading that article, I would have drafted him. Scott Powers wrote it for the Athletic; seriously the best money I spent, getting a subscription. Love his stuff.
There was some other kid who people wanted to draft… some defenseman. Well, I guess he wasn’t just some guy. He was clearly the best defender in this class, and if I think about the Hawks biggest needs, I think about defense. When I think about the deepest positions within their system, I think of defense though… they’re young, but there are a lot of them. That’s why I was all in on Turcotte. When they announced Kirby Zach’s name, I was a bit in shock.

He’s a big kid; he plays center. Maybe this is a guy who Toews can groom. I’m sure he’s still filling out… will get a lot stronger. He’s got the frame. I don’t know; why not? As I talk myself through this, I feel just like I did with the Bulls pick; I’m fine with it. I don’t think they blew it or anything like that. Of course, the jury is out on this one too. This pick could be the end of Bowman; it could also be the pick that keeps him around for a while. Definitely not in the same category as GarPax, but certainly should be under scrutiny after sending Q packing, Bowman should have a short leash.
If this pick hits, he may survive. If it flops, just one more piece of evidence that he should be gone; just another vote for the Fire Bowman crowd. I’m already there for GarPax; I think it’s fair for Stan to be on thin ice, but maybe he gets more rope? He does have 3 Cups… although Dale Tallon would have something to do with that now, right?
Would really love to see this guy on the ice this year; that’s what I’m most concerned about. If the Bulls window isn’t open yet, the Hawks one is about to close… if it hasn’t already. We need to make something happen THIS year. We need to get into the dance and take our chances. Hopefully Kirby can help us with that. Go Hawks!
