June 22, 2015: Cub Power

It’s nice to have some power on your team. Although that’s not necessarily a recipe for success, being able to hit the ball out of the yard is the play everybody wants to see.

Kris Bryant went deep twice on Monday night, once against the mighty Clayton Kershaw.  He has been eveything that we hoped he would be. The kid can flat out rake. The power numbers haven’t been off the charts…yet, but he’s on pace for 30. Rookie of the year?  If not him, the only other guy would be Joc Pederson. He was playing across the diamond, and went deep in this one too off the new Cubs closer Jason Motte.

Its not just Bryant that has Sweet Home Chicago blaring from the Wrigley Field speakers. By the way, I like that. I like that they play that song any time a Cub goes deep. It’s kind of like that da da da da da da da when the Hawks light the lamp. It adds to the in game experience, although winning is the ultimate result.

So back to Rizzo…I haven’t been 100% zoned in yet, so when I heard the Cubs broadcasters talking about MVP candidates and Rizzo being a front runner, I was like, really?  Yeah, really. This guy does it all. Again, his power numbers aren’t at the same pace as last year, but it’s his whole game. From fielding, to improving to be one of the best left handed hitters against left handed pitching, to his leadership, the guy is a stud. And oh yeah, his numbers aren’t too bad either.

Heck, the whole Cubs infield appears set, unless we have some more position changes. With Castro and Russell up the middle, this is one of the best infields in baseball. If not this year, then for the next couple.  Russell has been holding his own, and should only get better. Castro, although he still has his moments, has become a much better fielder. He’s also one of the Cubs clutch hitters. 2 walk offs and 3 game winning Rbi’s in the past week!

So the future looks bright…we’ve been here before. I remember prior, wood, and zambrano being the Cubs aces for years to come. That didn’t work out as expected. It’s all about this year…whatever the current year in progress is. Yes, the future looks awesome, but the present is looking awesome too, and that’s what it’s about.

With a win against Kershaw and the Dodgers, the Cubs improved to 8 over 500; their best record of the season. A wild card is in plain sight, but…there’s still those birds. Those birds who we’ll be playing this weekend. Let’s see if we’re ready this time around.  Last time, we got put in our place, which is still below the Cards.  At the end of the day, this is the team we’re going to have to get past, whether it be in the NL Central standings or in the NL playoffs.  Are we ready for that yet?  Let’s see just how powerful this Cubs team is.

With Hockey behind us, its time to put the Cubbies front and center. The Cubs have a nice young team with plenty of future stars. Why not make a playoff push this year? Isn’t that what most teams are shooting for? Lets add a few spices to the stew of young talent, taking this Cubs team from a quick dinner to a 3 course meal. Nothing major, just some seasoning.

Acquiring veterans , platoon players, and utility players would go a long way in the playoff push. How about Ben Zobrist? I think he would fit in nicely as a utility player. Or maybe sure up the starting five by loading up with Clay Buchholz or maybe bullpen help from Jonathan Papelbon. I really do not think the Cubs would have to give up much for those players.

Either way, Cubs don’t lose as long as the core stays the same. Your 8 games over .500 and we know the teams in our way…so let’s send a message…were here..and were coming….

Cubs doing well so far…long way to go but there is legitimate hope this year and beyond! Bryant has lived up to every bit of the hype so far. Rizzo is playing like an mvp, and all of the other young guns look promising. Add a pitcher before the deadline and who knows. All the Cubs need to do is make the playoffs…anything can happen then! GO CUBS GO!!!

Agree on adding a starter. Hamels may go to the Cards, and Price isn’t going anywhere this year. Chris sale to the Cubs anyone?
