Let’s talk about the Bulls draft for a minute.

I still remember last year’s draft, and finding out that the Bulls traded Jimmy Butler while out for pizza with my family.  I was pissed.  Still don’t think it was a great deal, although I do feel it is a bit fairer than I originally thought.  Markkanen looks to be the real deal; a draft pick nailed by the Bulls.  Lavine is still a question mark.  He wasn’t healthy, and now, he’ll be looking for a max deal.  Yes, we’ll see how that plays out, but don’t the Bulls need to sign him?  And then there’s Dunn… certainly was a serviceable PG; looking for more from him too.  3 starters for 1 starter; not too bad right?  But how many superstars did we get out of the deal?  We gave one away…

The Bulls kept the same strategy in this year’s draft.  It was team building.  It was putting pieces together.  It was adding what will hopefully be 2 more starters for the future.  It wasn’t taking a shot and going after potentially the 2nd best player in the draft.  It was getting the best available player and filling needs at the same time.  The Bulls have plenty of needs.

Wendell Carter Jr. was picked at 7.  I thought we were going to grab Michael Porter Jr.  But… I’m OK that we didn’t.  I would have talked a lot of crap had we picked him and he ended up injured his whole career, especially since that is already out there.  Hip and back problems already… more than just the Bulls took that into serious consideration.  He dropped until 14, where the Nuggets took a shot.  If he would have dropped to 22, I would have felt good about taking that chance on him.  But back to Wendell…

Solid pick.  I don’t claim to know a lot about these guys since I watch a limited amount of college basketball, but… I do remember this guy.  I remember watching Duke play in the tourney, and thinking was this the guy that everybody is touting as a top draft pick.  It wasn’t; that guy was Bagley.  But this guy, Carter Jr., was playing his ass off.  I liked what I saw there.  I would say double double machine in the NBA; nothing wrong with that.  I don’t like some of the comps I heard though…

Someone compared him to Carlos Boozer.  Now Booze had a decent career and all, but he just brings on a headache for me when I consider his Bulls career.  He was painful to watch at times.  Yeah, he’d put the defender in the spin cycle, and make some of those rain makers, but too often he was screaming for no reason and looking lost on defense.  The guy with a great low post game showed none of it.  Then the other person I think of is Elton Brand.  All Blue Devils, all similar skill sets.  But I’d like to think Wendell will be better than both of those guys.  I like his wingspan, and his defensive ability, especially with the shot blocking.  It’s not quite Mo Bamba, but he does cause some shot changing at the rim.

Chandler Hutchinson was next up at 22.  No clue about this guy, except that the Bulls told him they would draft him if he was there; is that right?  What if Porter was still there?  We’ll never know, but we will know how this guy turns out.  Will it be a late 1st round steal a la Buckets?

The Bulls added one solid piece and one potentially solid piece.  That’s two more pieces than they had, so in my book, I’m saying this draft was good.  Of course, I reserve the right, and will come back and talk crap if one or both of these guys flop, just like I would have about Porter had we taken him and his injured ass.  Who knows, maybe Porter will be a stud.  Definitely has a higher ceiling than the guy we took, but… we’ve been through the Rose injury drama; definitely didn’t want to sign up for that again.

It will be exciting to watch it all come together.  Hoping no more tanking.  Hoping only 2 more years of Hoiberg, so that in year 3, we bring in a stud head coach to help take this young team that has grown to the promised land.  The Chicago Bulls, your 2021 NBA champions.  Go Bulls!

Not real sure about either draft pick for the Bulls…probably because I dont know enough about either. I just hope the Bulls brass did their jobs and now get lucky with 2 talented pieces to help make Bulls basketball back on the map. A duke blue devil at #7 though makes me cringe. How many stud dukies have their been? Kyrie comes to mind and then a bunch of serviceable talent. Maybe wendall falls in that bucket, too, and that might not be horrible. Still, I want big splashes out of the Bulls. Turn the damn thing around and start competing…now! Who has the best chance to win a title next between the Bears, Bulls, and Hawks? My money and heart would be on the Bears, but who really knows. Kind of like the Bulls draft picks…we shall see. GO BULLS!!!
