How important is your record in one run games?
For a losing team, like the Cubs were up until last year, I thought it was a good gauge of how close they were. So regardless of their overall record, they played in (and lost) a ton of one run games. I felt like that made the Cubs better than their actual record was in those days…
Last year it finally panned out, and I would throw some stats at you, but that would take time to research, so I won’t. But last year, it finally normalized. Yeah, it helped that all the mega prospects were brought up, Jake turned into superman, and everything else we know, but the Cubs finally broke through in a big way.
Now to this year, and the Cubs awesome start. Fact is, we haven’t really played in many one run ball games… and our record in those games, is not very good. What does that tell us? Number one, that we’re blowing teams out. That doesn’t factor into the whole one run game thing, but beating a team by more than one run is better than winning by one run, yes? Secondly, the one run games that we’re losing, it seems like the other teams have to do everything in their power to make that happen. That’s been the Cubs losses as of late.
The Nationals extra inning loss was by one run. We gave up the tie, blew the lead 2 times, and lost the game. So we had it in our grasp, but the other team pushed and pushed and won. The Cardinals the past 2 nights fall into that same bucket. In the first loss, they got lucky… that wild pitch in the 9th that Almora got thrown out on, was pure luck. It hit the ump’s leg, Molina immediately picked it up, and it still took a perfect throw to nab Almora at 3rd. Every single thing had to go the Cards way in that scenario, just like it seems every single thing has to go a team’s way to beat the Cubs.

The following night was the same one run loss. In each of these losses, I never felt like the Cubs couldn’t win the game. They were never out of it, they were in each of these ball games, they always had a chance to win. They were great baseball games. So if the Cubs aren’t blowing teams out, they’re losing one run ball games? Not entirely true, but a lot of our losses have been of the 1 run variety. We have won 9 of those one run games, but that still equals a losing record in those type of ball games.
Out of the 22 losses, 11 have come the one run variety. 5 more have come the 2 run variety. What does that tell us, because after all, a loss is a loss. It’s just something else for everybody to talk about. Haven’t heard too much talk yet, but it will come.
The talk will be the Cubs record in close games, and how that’s all it is in the playoffs, and that doesn’t bode well. I like Maddon’s take on it… they’re good games, and we’re going to lose some good games type stuff. That works for the regular season. That works while we’re still the best team in the majors. That will NOT work in October. That will NOT work if we start to slide.
I don’t believe we’ll slide. I do think that 100 games is definitely something we can achieve, considering, the Cubs only have to go 53-50 from this point on to finish with 100 wins. Think about that for a second…
So yeah, I think we’re OK when it comes to the regular season. But in looking ahead, and being cautiously optimistic as we are, the one run game may get some more play. Easy fix… let’s just start winning them. Go Cubs!

Cubs had their slide last week. Hopefully, we they get their act together and dont let this run of bad games continue. 1run games are important. You need to be in them to know how to hold a slim lead or comeback late. I have faith that the Cubs have the experience and talent to do both. The bats have been quiet, but they will not stay that way. Hard to have a lot of 1run games when your run differential is so high. Either way, the Cubs will be fine.
