June 20, 2019: The Swap

posted in: Cubs | 0

I sent a text message early on Thursday to the park to see if the games were going to be on.  It rained Wednesday night & a bit Thursday morning.  It was cool and cloudy all day.  The fields typically don’t recover well.  I wanted to know as soon as possible to inform our parents.  As the day went on, I got curious, and checked the ticket prices to the Cubs series opener against the Mets.  Yep, they looked good.  So, if our game was called, it was Wrigley time.  I got the text about 3pm; game was cancelled.  Went online and scooped up 2 tickets; the swap was official.  We were heading to Wrigley.

It gets tough when summer rolls around; we’re still waiting by the way.  The ticket prices to Wrigley start shooting up.  Forget about going to a weekend game at a reasonable price.  With the weather still not there yet, and it being cloudy all day, and with it supposed to clear up at night, I thought this was a perfect time to strike… and it was.  2 tickets under $50 is right in my wheelhouse.  The last time we made it to Wrigley, they were less than that; April and May weeknight games are typically pretty low.  But on June 20th, in what turned out to be a beautiful Thursday night at Wrigley, the value was there.  Plus, it was a giveaway; a Baez sliding coin bank.  That meant we had to get there really early to ensure we got ours.  We did.

Now it was time to head to our seats and watch some BP.  Started drinking our juice boxes and water, eating our snacks, and then we went to grab some nachos.  My son found a kid his age sitting in the row behind us; he was talking with him as I chatted with his grandfather.  He was getting a bit impatient, considering we were there almost 2 hours before the game started.  Finally, the anthem, the starting lineups, and play ball.

Once the first inning is over, we usually will head outside to play some catch; this game was no different.  I remember liking to watch the Cubs on TV growing up as a kid, but the thing that always topped that, was playing baseball.  I’ve said it before, but the way Wrigley is setup now, the outside part, is great.  The big grassy area for kids to play, with a huge screen TV in the background, sitting right outside of left field, it’s awesome.  It was there we watched the Mets take a 3-0 lead, and the Cubs score 6 to take a 6-3 lead.  My son and I were playing a game of our own.  He’ll pick two teams, and I’ll “bat” for each of them, throwing him grounders and popups, recording runs and outs for each for a full 9 innings.  My son is a really sharp fielder.  I had 2 different dads ask me how old he was; they said how great he was at catching and throwing the ball.  When I told them he was only 7, they were really impressed.  Maybe we need to play out there every game, catch an eye of a scout, and get that first guaranteed contract… haha.

We headed back inside in the top of the 5th, and the rookie was on the mound.  I had told my son about him before the game; told him what number he’d be wearing.  And here he was.  Adbert Alzolay (I’m going to have to look that up for a while) #73 pitched a scoreless 5th.  An inning later, he struck out the side; we gave him a standing O.  It was a pretty special night for the rook… lasting 4 innings before being pulled in the top of the 9th after giving up his only run on a solo shot by the Toddfather.  He left to another standing O, as he recorded his first career win in his first career appearance.

The other highlight of the night was the Baez home run.  My son and I each pick 2 guys in the lineup that we think are going to hit home runs; I picked Bryant and Cargo.  He picked Rizzo and Baez.  When Javy went deep, I picked him up in celebration, as we high fived the whole row in front of us.  Being at Wrigley with my boy is pretty special.

The Cubs winning helps of course.  As we watched the Reds and Brewers highlights on the big screen, we cheered.  We knew that if the scores held up, the Cubs would open their division lead to 1.5 games; they did.  That’s where we sit heading into the weekend.  Can’t wait to be back.  Go Cubs!
