Like the Olympics, the World Cup happens every four years. Who you got?
And now is the part where I say I don’t like soccer. I never watch it. I think it’s boring. It’s not the biggest sport in this part of the world. And…all of that does not apply to the World Cup.
I really enjoy it. I’m not clearing my calendar for it, but I do find myself checking results each day, and checking the group standings. As the games get bigger, I could see making time to watch them. Yeah, and people complain about the flopping, and it does happen, but it’s not any worse than the NBA…or maybe that’s why you don’t watch the NBA either. Anyways, I’ve seen some collisions where the guys just sucked it up and kept playing too. I’ve also seen some where it was legit, and it definitely looked like it hurt. Anyways…
I’ve seen a lot of great saves. I’ve seen some awesome goals. I’ve seen a lot of penalty kicks; can’t believe Messi missed his. As one of the greatest in the world, it’s crazy that he couldn’t convert. It was a great save though. It’s been very watchable overall.
I think one of the biggest reasons is that it’s on early in the morning. I like the fact that I can get up and turn on a live sporting event. In Vegas, it was on even earlier and that was good considering we were still on Chicago time out there for the first couple days. Getting up at 5am, there it was…a World Cup soccer game.

If that’s a big part of the reasoning, I’m sure there are other live sporting events on at that time normally right? Isn’t that English Premier League on early?
I don’t think I’m going to start watching that. It’s kind of similar to the Olympics that way. I wouldn’t watch a regular season Luge competition, or a regular beach volleyball game. But when it comes to the Olympics, I’m all about those two. I think another big reason and similarity is how big of stage it’s played on. The whole world is watching. Folks travel from their country to see this in person. The fans at these World Cup games are crazy; I can respect and relate to that.
I think it’s pretty pathetic that the US isn’t there. I know the whole argument about our best athletes playing other sports, and that’s true. And the whole thing about it’s popularity here, and that’s also true for the most part. But you can’t tell me we couldn’t field a team that could make this tourney. I don’t buy it one bit.
Well, that makes it easy as far as rooting interest. Pretty much anything goes. As each game comes on, my son and I will pick which team we’re rooting for. He likes to wait to see who scores the first goal to make his decision. Ha ha. We’ve also added soccer to our game rotation. We’ve had some pretty heated matches in the basement, plus nothing has been broken yet.
The World Cup is back and I’m all in. Ready for the knockout stage. Look at me, like I know what I’m talking about. Haha.

The World Cup is like the Olympics, only around every 4 years, so just like them, I enjoy watching soccer. It is not something I watch otherwise, but for these few weeks, I try to catch what I can and keep up with the standings. My son is all into it, up and ready in front of the tv nice and early. I love when the group stage is over and knockout out rolls around. That means no more ties…you get extra time and then penalty kick shootout. It is embarrassing that the US did not make it, but this is the world’s sport just about everywhere but here. Fans live and breath this game. For these few weeks, I wont get that close, but I will be paying attention and watching.
