What’s the first thing you think of when you hear Minnesota? Maybe it’s Minnesota Fats, a fictional pool hustler? Nowadays, it’s probably the Mall of America. I was there once, a long time ago, before it became a city in itself. But for the purposes of this blog, we’re going to talk about the Minnesota sports teams.
Let’s start with the Wild, and the Hawks ownership of them. The supposed “State of Hockey” professional team the Wild has been dominated by the Blackhawks proven by 3 straight postseason exits. Before the Wild, there was the North Stars. From what I hear, the Hawks and the North Stars had a pretty heated rivalry back in the day. It’s not like that any more. Way less fighting, and a Hawks team more concerned about winning championships than kicking ass, along with a Wild team that hasn’t gotten over the hump, and that Chicago Minnesota rivalry is gone. It still has a chance to get going if the Wild can step up their game in the next couple years. Until then, the State of Hockey takes a back seat to the City of Champions in this sport.
Speaking of rivalries, the divisional rivalry that is the Bears VIkings has had some great moments over the years. The Walter Payton 275 yard game… against the Vikes. The 1985 awesome comeback by McMahon off the bench… against the Vikes. It hasn’t always been great memories there. The Vikings have had some decent teams over the years with Kramer to Carter, and Culpepper to Moss and Carter. The Metrodome was always a difficult place to play, with that damn Viking blowing his horn during the game. Another fond memory of the VIkings is when Brett Favre donned that uni, and Corey Wooten put him down on the frozen field of the Golden Gophers. Sweet!
The least respected team coming out of Minny is the Timberwolves. They had a decent run with Marbury and Garnett, but that was it. My memory of the TImberwolves is when they beat MJ and the Bulls for the first time in franchise history, and had a celebration fit for an NBA champ. With confetti coming down from the rafters, they celebrated like it was 1999. Although it’s the Wolves now, this was the original location of the Lakers… thus how the Lakers got their name, you know, the land of 10,000 lakes. Does Minnesota get to stake claim to all those NBA titles too? Nah.

This brings us to the Twinkies. I did see the Twins play in the Metrodome one time; very interesting stadium. Talk about a house of horrors… the place the White Sox dreaded. They weren’t complaining when they knocked that joint down, although the current stadium hasn’t been that great to them either. Actually, the Twins have a surprisingly good team this year. What a difference a manager can make. With Paul Molitor. Minnesota native, at the helm, they’re in 2nd place in the Central. The Sox are looking up at them again, although they can claim stake to that World Series. Something that the Twins haven’t had since 1987.
What about the Cubs? No real Minnesota rivalry here, however, with intraleague play, they get a chance to play the Twins every now and then, including this weekend. I’d definitely be up for a trip to that new stadium, although the drive is about 7-8 hours; that’s no small trek. The Cubs pulled one out in extras today to even the series up with the rubber game looming tomorrow.
So what’s your favorite Minnesota memory? Maybe you rooted for that 1987 team led by Chicagoan Kirby Puckett? Maybe you like Adrian Peterson today? Or maybe, there’s nothing really special coming out of that northern state. Maybe they should just stick to the mall and playing pool in a movie. Maybe that’s where they belong… as we continue to beat up on their teams. Hey, at least they gave us Byfuglien for that 2010 Cup run, and for that, we thank you.
