You think my all-time NBA starting lineup is good, wait until you see my second string. After going through the exercise to select my starters, coming up with roster spots 6-10 was easier than I thought; maybe spots 11-15 will be more difficult. Let’s go.
The closest call for me was selecting Oscar over Magic for my starting point guard; there really is no wrong answer. That being said, the first guy off the bench at backup point guard is Magic Johnson. One of the coolest things about Magic was how he had to play center his rookie season in the NBA Finals due to injury… AND they won! He was not your prototypical point guard. Although not a defensive stalwart, because of his height, he can play multiple different positions if necessary. This type of versatility is valued on this roster. Magic running the show at any point is a good place to be.
I feel great about my choice of Hakeem at starting center, but there are plenty of other can’t miss choices at that position. The guy that I will choose here is Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The most famous shot of all time has a spot on this team. Even Magic used that baby hook from time to time. Now we pair up these old teammates for our second string. I told you I wasn’t biased against the Lakers. In fact, if picking Magic and Kareem to head up the second string wasn’t enough to convince you, how about my backup shooting guard?

Out of all the “want to be like Mike guys”, Kobe may have been the best. Bringing MJs top student onto this roster, allowing him to grow even more playing on the same squad as Mike, is a very smart move in my opinion. And if Kobe gets a little crazy with his shooting, who better than Magic to reel him back in? So the Lakers make up 60% of our second string; what about the other 2 guys?
Before landing on Garnett as my starting power forward, I was leaning to Duncan; his time is now. Tim Duncan is about as solid as you can get. Offense, defense, championships, team guy, more versatility being able to play center as well… Tim was an easy choice. The final guy may show my bias a bit, but it’s not like I’m selecting Toni Kukoc… Scottie Pippen welcome to the roster. You want defense, we got defense. You want versatility, we got versatility. The best “robin” of all time can be reunited with his batman whenever coach chooses. Am I picking an all time NBA coach too? OK, sure… easy… Phil Jackson. Haha…
So there you go. My second string looks like this: Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Just imagine the substitutions Phil could make. I know I said I wouldn’t just pick the top 15 players of all time, but out of this 10, most of them would be on that list. The toughest task remains: filling the last 5 roster spots. I’ll close out my all time NBA roster next.
