Back to these multiple steps we’re going to need to become a better team… 19 steps pops into my mind. That’s the number of steps I take to get to 38 feet, which is the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate. To be fair to the kids, I have NOT pitched from that distance during any of our practices thus far. To be fair to the kids, I wanted to pitch from a closer distance, so that they could get used to putting that bat on the ball. Question for me now is, do I stay at a closer distance, or pitch from the mound we’ll be using in the game? This is just one of the random thoughts running through my head… thinking of ways I can maximize our practice time, and help these kids get better.
I thought about bringing back out the tee… again, just to help kids work on that swing… or even soft toss, where I kneel down next to each kid, and flip them the baseball as they hit it into the fence. Same concept of course. Thing is, not enough time to work through all these drills… or maybe there is… maybe we skip catching and throwing and go straight to hitting; there’s a thought. At the end of the day, they’ll need to have to hit my pitching from the mound; that’s the only way we’re going to win a game. But winning isn’t the most important thing right now… but these kids will get sick of losing, right? I know one that will.
This is going to test my coaching skills no doubt. Maybe I propose another practice day during the week? That would help. Definitely splitting up the team with the assistant coaches during practice to maximize our time will work. One of the coaches had one of those “hitting sticks”… a ball on the end of a stick, where the kids can practice swinging and making contact with the ball. That could be one drill. We can do soft toss on the other side, and pitch on the field… splitting the hitters into groups of 3 or 4, depending on how many kids we have show up… as long as the weather cooperates of course.

The games will be every Thursday and Saturday, so practice time is really limited then. Hmmm… First thing first, I need to get to the park with my son to practice his hitting some more. If every parent did that, that would help tremendously. Yeah, it should be a no brainer, but I will recommend that to the parents at practice this week.
We’ll get there… going to be a lot more than those 19 steps I take out to the mound to measure those 38 feet, but we’ll get there… this year or the next… we’ll get there. Ready to practice now.
