June 2, 2016: Neck Twitch

24 hours without gambling in Vegas turned to 36; this has to be a record.  As I walked through the casinos, past the slot machines, past the sports book, past the tables, past the poker room… my neck started twitching.  I have to do something…so I did.

It was a penny slot that I shoved that first $20 in, and a few minutes later, I was walking away satisfied, but down that $20. The seal had been broken.  Now what?

The $60 midnight hold’em tournament at the Flamingo was where I sat next…hoping to make some money. I had chopped the prize with some guy a number of years ago…my only tournament win. Maybe I could rekindle that flame…

I was 20 minutes late, and became the 22nd player in the tourney when they called alternate number two.  22 is my lucky number. You always look for those little things in Vegas. Whether it’s the floor you stay on, your room #, or this number on a ticket. I thought this had to be a good sign.

The best part of a tournament, besides winning of course, is BSing with the other players.  The big stack at the table was this drunk guy sipping on his jack on the rocks. He was raising every hand. I had a guy from London on my right and a lady from Vancouver on my left.  There was also the first alternate who appeared to be a lady who does this often.  When she asked to see the drunk big stack’s chips, it was a purpose move; he didn’t appreciate it. And so we were off..

Not sure about you, but I will play some hands that have brought me good fortune in the past. 3-2 of spades was part of my one and only straight flushes back in the day at Monte Carlo. I played this hand tonight.  When the flop came 2 spades, and the raise was reasonable, I saw the turn bring that fifth spade.  The flop raiser upped his bet, and I pushed all in. He called and looked surprised when I turned over the flush…which destroyed his top pair.  Game on.

I won another big hand before I made the decision that I looked back on. Similar spot, I had 4 to the flush after the flop, when the jack on the rocks guy moved all in. It put almost all my newly acquired chips on the line; did I want to chase?  I did also have middle pair, but put him on the ace trying to push me out. I thought about it for a while, and decided to fold. What would you do?

Well, I ended up lasting to the final table before getting outkicked with top pair; the hand that crippled me.  After the other alternates and a few rebuys, the total people in this tourney was about 28; I finished 10th.  No money for me.

I did play for 2 hours, and after losing another $20 on the way back to the room, the total day 2 damage was $100. I still thought that was pretty good.  I knew I had one day left.  How would this Vegas story end?  The next blog will complete it.

    Penny slot?!? WTF!?! HAHAHA
Nice flush catch with your rags, 3-2…with middle pair and flush draw with 2 cards coming, plus going against big stack raiser, might have been the play to chase, but 50-50 call. $100 loss in one day can happen on one hand so not too bad…bounce back on day 3???
