So the first of my two trips happened on Father’s Day; Happy belated Father’s Day by the way to all who want to accept that well wish. We deserve it, well, most of us do, hopefully. I can’t speak for all the fathers out there, but I can speak for myself; I can speak for my dad as well. We were going back to Vegas on this day to see one of the other fathers in our lives. My father in law lives out there, so we made our annual trip out West to spend some time.
How unlucky am I? You know, that my father in law lives in Vegas. Why would I ever want to go to that place? That place full of every vice imaginable. I don’t have any of those vices; makes no fricking sense. Why couldn’t he live in some quiet rural area, where we can relax…. haha. Yeah, well, on the contrary, Vegas fits me pretty well. I don’t indulge in ALL of the vices, at least not any more, but there are still plenty to get into. Smoking, drinking, gambling… three words that would be on my non-professional resume. Yes, my father in law living in Vegas, actually, is pretty perfect. Other than him living in Chicago, and getting to see my son on a regular basis, this is the next best place… haha.
Here’s where the sleep deprivation got really bad though… Up at 230am on Sunday morning to shower and get ready to head to the airport for our 530am flight. I got exactly 2 hours of sleep before getting airborne. I probably slept about half the flight out there, so not too bad. Once you set foot in Vegas, you instantly get a bump of adrenaline; this was true yet again. Only thing with that boost, is it doesn’t last forever; eventually, you will hit a brick wall. Now there have been trips where that took maybe 36 hours to reach, but not this one. No, I’m an old F-er now…
Usually when the day is over and we’re heading back to our room, my wife hits the slots up, while I go back to the room with my son. She may stay down there 30 minutes. Well, that’s all it took on this evening. By the time she came back up, I was already fading; she said are you really going to sleep!?!? I said, yeah, I’ll just knock out for a few, and then head down to the casino when I wake up. Well, I woke up at 7am…
Still, that first day was great. A Father’s Day brunch with my father in law, and an awesome dinner at Oscar’s downtown at the Plaza hotel. First time there, it definitely won’t be my last. Absolutely loved it. In fact, I hadn’t been downtown in years; the addition of the Circa certainly has it looking upwards, but yeah, that crowd on Fremont Street… that’s Vegas baby. As my 10 year old son walked in front of us, I can only imagine what was going through his head, as he took the scene in. Women in thongs and pasties, half naked guys lifting up girls to take pictures with, multiple street performers, homeless people wandering around in the middle, and of course, a bearded dude with a white dress on dancing to his boom box… yeah, well… let another Vegas trip begin!
