I’m only on my second trip to Vegas and it’s already getting fuzzy. I know one of the early ones was with a couple guys that I knew since kindergarten. We had a long history of playing cards together; going to Vegas together was the natural next step.
There were two kindergarten classes at the school I went to; it was called Whittier. One of my friends was in the same class, the AM one I believe, while the other buddy was in the PM class. I think we unofficially met each other when there was a big spill in the gym during a special event. Officially we met in 1st grade where we were all in the same class; it would remain that way the next eight years. When did we first start playing cards together? It had to be around 7th/8th grade. We would gather in my buddy’s basement with his 13 cats roaming around. We would play with nickels, dimes, and quarters. We were eventually joined by another guy from the neighborhood, not from the same school. We played together for years… just us four. You could say that was the original four of card playing in my life, outside of my grandmother and family that is. But it was us four who would play countless nights over the next 10 years; where do you think I started drinking those captain and cokes? There would always be music playing; Chicago and Santana were my favorite card playing soundtracks. Years later I would see both of them live at Ravinia. OK, getting off track…
Yeah, so we all jumped on a plane and headed to Vegas. We were degenerate gamblers at the time; some things never change. Yes, we don’t have nearly the same amount of time on our hands, and some of us don’t have the same money to blow, but gambling is in our blood. On the plane for example, we were betting on hands of poker on the handheld game we brought with us; I think I was up about $150 by the time we landed. I believe we stood at the Imperial Palace this trip; there were a few times we were in Vegas together. We all piled up in one room, two beds. The guy(s) who came to the room last would either snuggle up with somebody else or hit the floor; yeah, I was sleeping on that floor that I’m sure was super clean.

It was perfectly located; I liked the celebrity impersonators dealing the games. One trip, not this one, we met Vlade Divac outside of there; man was he tall. This trip we hit downtown for a minute, and of course, walked up and down the strip. We would stop at each and every casino and gamble for a minute. The Riviera was the place we were at the longest, as one of my friends and I entered a slot tournament; it was my first ever. We didn’t win anything, but man we played for what seemed like hours; I know I was tipsy walking out of there after having a couple hours worth of Coronas.
This group didn’t get too crazy; we had to hit a strip club though… I’ll have to ask them the next time we talk. We talk a few times a year, each others’ birthdays, holidays… we were still getting together once a year to play, but we skipped 2019; the way 2020 is going who knows. But yeah, going to Vegas with these guys, my oldest friends, was classic; they will make a return visit to these pages as I continue on… I’m sure we’ll all make it back there together again one day… one day…
