Wrapping up this series on future odds from the desert, we go to the sport that actually has a team located in Vegas. Let’s get an early look at the NHL for next year.
Speaking about that team… there was really Vegas Golden Knight fever out there. The Statue of Liberty has a jersey on; the MGM lion has the Knight symbol on his chest. There was gear everywhere you turned. I gave my players card that has a Blackhawks symbol on there, to the girl to signup for a tournament. She was showing people, telling me she shouldn’t even set me up. I asked her if she was a Knights fan, and she said yes… that she got all into it. I told her I was rooting for them… that was last season.
It was kind of funny how they went out… you know, Papa Vegas making sure his own team didn’t win so they wouldn’t have to pay out all that money. He sure slammed the door shut on that; killed that party quick. Still, it was a nice run, and at 7-1 odds for the 2019 Cup, there will be no need to intervene. I think they’ll have a good year… not sure they’ll get back to the finish line though. We know how that goes.
The Blackhawks will now enter year 11 of this era. If we start the era with the 2008-2009 season, when we made the Western Conference Finals against the Wings, then the 2018-2019 season will be year 11. It’s been a fabulous era, including most importantly 3 Cups, 2010, 2013, & 2015 in 6 years. Do the Hawks have another Cup run in them?

Well, according to Vegas, the odds are 30-1. I would say that’s close to the middle of the odds. With the favorites being Vegas, Tampa Bay, and Nashville at 7 & 8 to 1, and the worst odds being Edmonton and Vancouver at 125-1, the Hawks are just sitting there in the middle; not too promising. Yet, the Hawks still have some core pieces of the golden era… maybe some that folks don’t want any more (Seabrook), and some that have lost a step (Keith & Toews), we still have a top flight guy (Kane). That is joined with the infusion of young talent, who by the way, we recently extended; it was Hayden and Vinnie I believe. The key question for the Hawks is Crawford, and I haven’t heard anything saying he is locked and loaded and ready to go. Without Crow, we saw what happened…
After watching the playoffs, I felt like the Hawks were further away from challenging for the Cup than they have been in a long time… like 2007-2008 maybe… Now, a couple years ago, I would have never said that. Is this how it goes? The end of an era? Does it go that quickly? It did for the Bulls; everybody walked after #6. It did for the Bears; zip since XX. It did for the Sox; zip since 2005. The Cubs are still going…
I’m not ready to put money on the Blackhawks winning the Cup, but I’m not ready to throw in the towel either. A healthy Crow, the young guys improving, and a key acquisition or two, and we can be right back in the mix. Go Hawks!

30-1 odds seems reasonable for the Hawks. I mean, they are a big question mark after last season. Yes, the core is in tact, but it is getting older and slower…2 things not good for teams. But they also have some good young talent. Can the Hawks and Q find a way to put it all together for another Cup run? I sure hope so. I missed actually caring about playoff hockey. GO HAWKS!!!
