Everybody knows that the Sox play on 35th st. It’s the red line stop title. You can take the bus down 35th. Everybody walks to and from the stadium down that main street. But what’s the cross street?
You know where I’m going here right? I thought it was pretty appropriate when the Sox acquired him, considering this geographic fact. Kind of like when the Cubs acquired a kid named Addison, since they were never able to get Gary Sheffield. So when the team that plays on 35th and Shields acquired a pitcher named James Shields, it had to work right? At this point, I don’t even want to write that name.
His first start wasn’t good, and the Sox faithful let him hear it immediately. No breaks here kid. I’m all for booing a guy, but that was a pretty quick trigger. Maybe it was a sign of things to come. So far, it has been.
When I got back in the house this evening and saw the score of the Sox game, I said “no, not again”. After checking the box score, it was confirmed. Oops, he did it again.
In 3 starts, Big Game James has recorded 26 outs. In that 8 2/3 innings, he’s given up 22 runs. No, I did not make a typo. No, you aren’t that drunk. It’s true and it hurts.
I thought the move was solid; it still may be, but that’s kind of hard to imagine at this point. I can’t remember a worse 3 game stretch for anybody. I’m sure Twitter will tell me, but man. I haven’t see one pitch, but from what I’ve heard, he’s hitting that radar gun in the mid 80s. Is that true? If so, that just didn’t start happening did it? What was initially thought to be a necessary move to help save the Sox season, looks to be a pretty desperate one. Depending on how this plays out long term: pick a timeframe. The rest of the month. The rest of this season. The remaining 2 years on his contract. This could look really bad on Hahn. Ventura may have to pay the price sooner.

I do think he has to go, but in his defense, he can only run out the guys you give him. Can’t put that on Robin. And what? Are they going to DFA Shields too? Talk about biting the bullet. That’s millions and millions of dollars down the tubes; worse or just as bad as Carl Crawford. Hey, weren’t they teammates?
But there’s always the next start. Maybe he’ll turn it around. He can’t be that bad right? Again, Robin may not be around to see it.
Based on all the recent moves trying to stop the bleeding, and with a week of division games, I thought this was a make or break week. Shields started it off, putting the Sox in a 7-0 hole. Sox came back, and made a big statement in my eyes about their guts and still backing their manager. They won that series too. But now, after another Shields bomb, the Sox are on the brink of being swept by the Indians. That would mean a 2-4 week.
What are the odds? Based on Shields performance, do you need to look at Hahn too? Laroche, Latos, Rollins…none as bad as this one. Small sample? Yes, but will it matter?
This is a big old mess. It’s 35th and WTF…the home of 2016 Sox. Started the season 23-10; now 33-34. Where do we go from here?

Liked the shields move for the sox but man has he been bad in his first 3 starts. It will not get any easier for him as he pitches versus the other color sox, the red ones, in boston. Here’s hoping he gets somewhat on track for the sox. It cant get much worse…rock bottom has arrived for shields. Time for him to show that he has something left in the tank, for his sake and the sox.
