June 17, 2021: Leaning on an Ace

This is what we expected out of Kyle Hendricks coming into this year. He did it again on Thursday night in Queens, ending a Cubs losing streak; that’s what aces do. I think we can look past his early season struggles at this point, as the Professor looks to be back to himself; he has to be.

Felt good to sneak out of New York with one win; who knew it would be that tough to win there? I certainly wasn’t up on the Mets place in the standings and their win loss record at home. I certainly think we should have at least split the series, but… I’ll take what I can get. Thankfully, even though we lost 3 out of 4, we’re still in first place in the division, by ourselves, thanks to the Brewers’ struggles this week. Behind the Brew Crew sitting 1 game back, there lurk the Reds and Cards at 3 and 4 games back respectively. Settle in for a dogfight all summer long. It’s anyone’s division to win, except of course the Pirates.

This brings me back to the broken record I’ve been playing; we need more starting pitching! Tony Andracki on Twitter told us all we need to know about that. The Cubs have 22 quality starts this season; 10 of them are from our ace. 12 are from everybody else combined. Any questions? I don’t know about all these new stats, but I do like the Quality Start. Of course, that’s when your starter goes 6 innings and allows three earned runs or less. This stat is especially critical when talking about the 2021 Cubs, because of course, our bullpen is fricking awesome. If our starting pitching can keep us in games via the quality start metric, we will win a lot more than we will lose. Although Hendricks leads in that department by far, in general, only 22 quality starts out of 69 games played doesn’t feel too good. I don’t know this for sure, but I imagine our record in those 22 games where quality starts were recorded is pretty damn good. Get a quality start, get the W.

And yes, that broken record again… we need help getting those QSs. When will Jed pull the trigger? When will any of our boys be extended? I always say we should just enjoy the ride, and believe me, I am, but… looking down the tracks, there is a lot of uncertainty. Not only for this year, and the worry about how long our current rotation can do their part to keep us in first place, but the long term. Of course you have to keep an eye on both, the short and long term, but… when you take a look around the major leagues, and this is part of that broken record, which team do we not stand a chance to beat? The Sox? Really? What I’m seeing from the Cubs thus far, and of course I always view the Cubbies through rose colored glasses, is that we can compete with anyone… if we shore up our team a bit. Can we do it as we’re constructed today? Maybe. Can we do it with some additions, especially STARTING PITCHING? Yes. If I’d have to choose between long and short, I’m going all in with this year; push those chips in Jed, and then see where they fall after it’s all said and done. Then when we win it all, extend everybody! Haha.. Heading back to the cathedral to face the Marlins (ugh!) for the weekend series. Go Cubs!
