June 17, 2019: Tale of Two Teams

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

One team is the favorite team for the majority of the city; another team is treated like a step child.  One team has made the playoffs the past 4 seasons; another team hasn’t sniffed them.  One team has put up 426 wins since 2015; another team with a decent start this year is at 317.  One team has won a World Series 3 years ago; another team is 14 years removed from its last.  One team is still in its championship window; another team is just opening theirs.  But you know what, this tale of two teams is thrown out the window for 4 days this year, because none of that matters.  It’s the Cubs vs Sox; let’s get it on.

These games always seem to be more important to the team that is doing worse; that team usually does better in these head to head matchups, or at least it seems that way.  Sure, it’s one game in the standings either way, and it sure seems like these games are more important for the Sox the way their fans hate the Cubs, but it’s still fun.  I pay attention to all the Cubs games, but there is definitely extra emphasis when playing the Cardinals, Brewers, and yes, the White Sox.  It’s a civil war of sorts; north side vs the south side they say.  These games started off as exhibitions way back when; now they actually count in the standings.  Yet, we haven’t met on the ultimate stage since 1906 where the Sox defeated the Cubs 4-2.  That’s way too long… now THAT would be the ultimate cross town matchup.  That would definitely feel like that civil war…

Looking at the teams this year, and where they’re both at in their respective windows, we may get to see that sooner than later.  The Cubs have become a perennial playoff participant, while the White Sox are on the upswing, almost ready to dip their toes back into October.  It’s fun to think about, especially about an event that nobody alive has seen; it’s even more years than when the Cubs actually won their World Series.  That kind of evened things out now didn’t it???

I’m sure White Sox fans will still try to fit into their 2005 World Series gear, just as the Cubs fans will wear theirs from a few years back.  But that’s a wash in this series right?  Both teams have 3 all time; both teams have one recent one.  So none of that matters right now.  The biggest question, one I asked every year since 2005 until 2016, is who wins the next one?  I’m sure Sox fans are feeling a little bit better about that question since the Cubs have failed to add another in their 2 playoff appearances since 2016.  Obviously my money is still on the Cubs, since THIS year would be the next opportunity, the Cubs certainly have a better chance at that, no matter how excited Sox fans got over seeing the 500 mark on Friday night.

No, a simple Cubs shirt and hat will do; no need to bring out the World Series gear… this isn’t the Dodgers we’re talking about.  And knowing how this series usually goes, for these first two games, I’ll take the Sox on Tuesday with Cubs killer Ivan Nova on the mound; 7-2 final score.  And I’ll take the Cubs on Wednesday against the Sox new found ace with a final of 3-1.  A two game split feels about right, with two more games before the All Star break still coming.  Let’s hope I’m wrong and the Cubs win both.  Have to humble these overconfident Sox fans right about now… Go Cubs!
