June 17, 2017: You Win Some, You Lose Some

I already have said that winning and losing at this age, the 4-6 age group, is not the most important thing.  But…the kids ask me. They want to know.  I should know how it goes.

Everything is a competition at home with my boy.  Whether it’s a light saber fight, ninja turtle battle, wrestling match, or a game of tag.  Maybe it’s whoever is done first brushing their teeth, or getting dressed, or the first one down the stairs to the car.  Winning/coming in first place is something that is already important to my son.  It’s so important, that when I slice his arm off, keep tagging him, or God forbid beat him in a race to the car, he gets upset.  It’s only natural; everybody likes to win and nobody likes to lose.  It starts when they’re young.

They have to be taught how to be good winners and good losers; something that I surely can teach him…well, at least the winning part.  Still figuring out that other part.  Yes, it’s a good thing.  It should be encouraged. It should be taught.  Unlike some want to make you believe, there are winners AND losers.  You can’t always win.

So we don’t keep score yet in our league; I’m ok with that.  But when the kids ask me, I need to tell them something.  I keep track of how many defensive outs each team has; that’s who won the game.  Based on that unofficial scoring system, we were 2-0 heading into this weekend.  We were 2-1 after our game on Saturday.  You win some, you lose some.

It was our first early game. It sure didn’t seem like our team was ready to play at 930am.  My son was.  He had a good game. He also had a good night sleep and a big breakfast.  I wonder how many of our boys had both of those; at this age, that’s part of the formula for success.  I guess we can say that about any age.

Yes, on this day there were kids throwing helmets and gloves, sitting in the dugout when we were on the field, and jogging on the base paths.  I’ll have something to teach this next practice, that’s for sure.  It was a totally different team than the previous week.

There were still bright spots.  We hit the ball well, just didn’t run.  We did get some outs, although we had more pileups on defense; can’t knock the aggressiveness.  Yes, when the kids asked me if we had won, I told them no; we lost this one.  Some of them couldn’t believe it.

It’ll be back to the basics on Friday.  I’ll start with a few words of wisdom about the previous week, followed by more hitting and fielding practice.  Practice, practice, practice.  I really do look forward to this each week.

Yes, then we will look to get back on the winning track, at least unofficially.  I wouldn’t mind actually keeping score, but I’ll go with the flow for now.  I’ll continue my unofficial system, and keep giving the kids the answer they’re looking for.  Coach, coach, did we win?  3-1 here we come!!!

Competition is good, even at a young age. Learning how to win AND lose is even better. Kids cant always win and should not always lose either. Practice makes perfect. Keep hammering the fundamentals and fun! Goodluck to 3-1!
