That’s the nice thing about Twitter. For all the sports people and sites that I follow, I get reminded of great dates in our Chicago sports history. 20 years ago today was one of those dates.
It was the Bulls 4th title… the 1st of the 2nd 3 peat. Not only is it near and dear to our hearts, it’s pretty relevant considering that Game 6 of this year’s NBA Finals is going on tonight. That 1996 Bulls team, if you recall… and if you don’t you’re an idiot… was the 72-10 team. This Golden State team is the 73-9 team. Yeah, 20 years ago to the day.
So what am I saying? That Golden State will win tonight? I wouldn’t mind. I’ve had some small second thoughts about it… like hoping the Warriors lose because then they wouldn’t be considered the greatest team, but I’ve gotten past that. Why? Because I know better… and anybody outside of Oakland should know better too. The Bulls would smash this Warriors team. Any of the Bulls championship teams would beat this Warriors team. It’s not opinion, it’s fact.
So I’m OK with the Warriors winning. Now there is another small reason. OK, a big reason. I hate LeBron, and don’t want him to win shit. It would be nice to see Golden State beat the Cavs and celebrate in Cleveland. Celebrating in Cleveland was something we were used to as Bulls fans.
The Shot of course. The 69 point game by MJ. And the Shot 2… no, I don’t mean the layup against the Lakers in the Finals, although that’s what it’s referred to by some. I mean the 2nd series clinching shot against the Cavs in Cleveland. The first one gets all the attention, and rightfully so… but that 2nd one.. that wasn’t too shabby either.

Remember Dominique Wilkins? Of course you do. He had a cousin named Gerald, and he thought he was the next of the supposed Jordan stoppers. He was on Cleveland that year… in 1993. He did about as well as everybody else did in their Jordan stopping role.
Jordan shredded him, and it was him who was guarding Jordan in Game 4 in the Eastern Conference Semis in Cleveland. The Bulls were up 3-0… looking to complete the sweep. Jordan backed him down as the clocked ticked down. Jordan posted him up, faded away, and BAM… another game winner! We ripped Cleveland’s heart out again. Jordan just extended his arms with palms upwards as his teammates mobbed him. Man I bet Cleveland really hated MJ….
So yeah, we have some great memories celebrating in Cleveland. It would be nice to see the Warriors do it tonight, although I won’t watch it. Yes, I’ll tune into the 2nd half of the game, but if the Warriors win, I’ll turn it right off… OK, maybe I’ll watch for a second just to see LeBum’s face… or the Cleveland fans. If LeBron wasn’t on this team, I would be rooting for the Cavs. With him on this team, I can’t. We’ve been over this.
But back to today, 20 years ago… how sweet it was. Already with a feature on the 1991 Bulls in the books, I will definitely be writing one about this 72-10 team; the greatest team in NBA history. We’ll definitely be doing that. Until then, let’s try to enjoy some of the Finals, and hope the Bulls do something positive this off season. You know, since last year’s off season was a bust. Time to get out of here.
