June 16, 2015: Happy Hangover

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

I’m sure Tuesday wasn’t the most productive day in Chicago…  Regardless of how you celebrated, and how you felt today, the overriding feeling was happiness.

It’s funny how the celebration has changed for me.  Flash back to the 2nd three-peat for the Bulls dynasty and we were in the streets with our Bulls horns on, drinking a Corona, and stopping traffic to high five every single car that passed by.  We pulled all nighters… kind of like the Hawks guys are going to do the rest of this week.  Now, my celebration includes lifting up and planting kisses on my version of the Stanley Cup:  my 3 year old son.  It’s all good.

I’m happy period.  I’m happy to celebrate this with my family.  My wife, who will be keeping me posted as she follows the Cup tracker these next few days; I’m sure we’ll follow it at some point.  My son, who has 2 championships in his short life, both from the Blackhawks.  My dad, who I’ve watched all or part of every clinching Blackhawks Cup game with these past 3 championships, and along with my mom, the first people I called after kissing my wife and son.  Then there’s my brother… the constant communication through each game, the back and forth, the number one commenter on this site; he was next.  Then to cap it off, had to reach out to my sister, who along with her husband were finishing watching the final seconds of the DVR version of the game when I called.  Then there was all the text messages sent out and received, along with all the happy talks at work today.  This is all something that hasn’t changed over the years…

Same goes for the Hawks.  Their greatness continues to shine through, just like that first year in Philly.  The Magnificent Seven of Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Hossa, and Hjalmarsson… members of each of these 3 Cup teams, some future Hall of Famers.  The true core.  We’ve added both younger talent and older guys to complement them.  There’s Coach Q… if you want to talk about future hall of famers, this guy will be first ballot as a coach all the way.  The front office… all the decisions that have had to be made over the years, and the questions coming from us fans… you can’t knock success.  3 out of 6 is a fabulous success rate for Stanley Cup championships.

The clutch gene of this team, as mentioned by the commenter referenced above… now, 10-0 in Game 6 of a series when leading 3-2.  The killer instinct.  The know how.  The experience.  I think of that commercial… “you’re at an age where you just know how to get things done”.  That’s this team.  The Four Horsemen of this series… Keith, Seabs, Hammer, and Oduya.  Keith rightfully awarded the MVP of the playoffs, the true #1 defenseman that makes it all possible.  And oh yeah, Crawford.  Benched at the beginning of these playoffs, he finishes giving up 2 goals in 3 games.  Pretty damn impressive.

It was a total team effort.  The MVP scoring the game winning, series clinching goal.  88 scoring his first goal of the Finals to seal it.  Crow making save after save.  It was Richards with 11 total assists in the playoffs.  Vermette with 2 game winning goals in the Final.  The Shaw-Desjardins-Kruger line that absolutely played their asses off.  You go up and down the roster, and everybody stepped up.  A total team effort that everyone in this city can be proud of.

This party is just getting started.  I watched on TV as the Cup made it to Wrigley Field tonight for the Cubs game.  Awesome!  The parade is Thursday, and with a different route this year, will actually go down the street I work on… perfecto!  The rally in Soldier Field, which should be crazy.  The party that will carry on full force throughout the weekend.  Only as Monday morning rolls around, will this city catch its breath.  It’s Blackhawks mania again; this time for the third time.  Celebrate, cherish, and enjoy that happy hangover!

The Mighty Blackhawks have an amazing coach and core that is surrounded with role players that buy into and follow the way of the Hawks! This franchise was flipped back onto its feet when rocky wirtz came into the picture, and they have never looked back. With this core locked up, the Hawks are a force to be reckoned with every year. Enjoy the Cup boys! Enjoy being champs Chicago! Parade and celebration time tomorrow…soak it all in!
