June 15, 2024: Father’s Day Eve

Why isn’t there an “eve” before every holiday? We have Christmas Eve. OK, I guess Easter has Holy Saturday. There is of course the famous Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the unofficial biggest party night of the year. Yes, New Year’s Eve too, or amateur night as those who know know. How about Father’s Day Eve? Let’s make that a thing. All the fathers get to party their asses off for a night, and take the next day off to relax. Now THAT would be a Happy Father’s Day.

My Mom was a big proponent of Birthday Eve’s. She would call me the day before my birthday every year to wish me a “Happy Birthday Eve”; I’m going to miss that. Luckily for me, I have one of those messages recorded; I guess I’ll have to settle for listening to that on the day before the big day. Of course, with my “big day” being the same as my parents “big day”… yes, I was born on their anniversary… my “big day” doesn’t seem like it will be so big this time around. OK, let’s cross that bridge when we get there. First thing’s first… Father’s Day!

I’m very lucky to have the father that I do; not everyone was as lucky. I knew some that didn’t even know who their father was; that must really suck. Much props to the Moms in that scenario, and any & all male role models who stepped up to make it happen. I think that’s important, although the sex of the role model in one’s life really doesn’t. The point is to have somebody in your life that is, or was. Just like the practice makes perfect entry from yesterday, nobody is perfect… yes, even my Dad. I may have thought that once upon a time. I also thought I was invincible too. Neither is true. Getting older and wiser seems to be a thing; well, at least one of them is true. Still, the reason I am the father I am today is thanks largely to the way my father was with me growing up; there is no doubt about it. That is of course assuming I’m a good Dad… I think my son would vouch for that… haha.

Being a parent is probably the most important job in the world. We are responsible for that next generation. There’s a whole heck of a lot that goes into it, that’s for sure, but for me, in pretty much every facet of my life, the most important is love. I was shown much love growing up; I am showing my son much love now. Trust, hope, faith… all important, but the most important, is love. I think there’s a saying like that; I subscribe to that 100%. For all the Dads on this Father’s Day weekend 2024, go out and show some love for those kids. Thanks for showing me Dad.
