It’s frustrating… when someone else involved in a passion of yours is not as invested as you are… can you really expect the same from someone else? Is that fair? Maybe, maybe not; I get it though, from both sides. Of course I’m talking about the Cubs, and as they continue to get their asses kicked night in night out, I’m getting pissed; it’s because I’m invested of course, as a fan. Obviously I’m upset at the game results, our place in the standings, etc, but more so at the direction of this team that was decided upon by the top of the house… this was a chosen path… It’s a hard pill to swallow.
As I’m sitting on the couch Wednesday night, watching the Cubs get crushed, I start talking crap… about our “not so new any more” announcer. Speaking of someone not invested… Boog doesn’t give two shits if the Cubs suck; he probably wouldn’t care if they were doing great either. This is just a job for him. He’s a national guy, who still drops in on national broadcasts multiple times throughout the year; I imagine that will increase as this season progresses, or digresses in the Cubs case. If he had a choice, you know which direction he’s going; do you blame him?
Maybe it’s the monotone voice too, putting us to sleep as the Cubs falter. It’s probably the whole Marquee company line that he and everybody else on that network has to toe as well; he can’t be critical of this team, and damn sure can’t say anything negative about the front office. He would get canned, and that sucks. There should be some level of honesty that he could share instead of helping the spin. I want to hear him get pissed off… I want to hear him talk some shit… like me. This is NOT acceptable. Maybe he has been; I’d much rather listen to Pat & Ron on the radio, and feel like I’ve done that a whole lot more than the TV crew. Maybe I’m unfairly pegging this dude… just somebody else catching wrath… because I’m upset about what they did to my Cubs… probably.
Or maybe he’s perfect for this team at this time, kind of like our manager David Ross. Do we really expect David Ross to be at the helm of the next great Cubs team, whenever the hell that will be? Do we really want to hear Boog’s voice narrating a magical summer? I guess I wouldn’t care, as long as the Cubs are winning. I guess this is what this is all about: the Cubs losing and everything bothering me. Makes sense… when you’re invested…
Boog is not though; he’s not a Cubs fan. That shouldn’t be a prerequisite for the position by any means, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt… it would help during these down days, instead of someone putting me to sleep, just trudging along, welcoming guest broadcasters in the booth, throwing it back to the studio or Taylor, asking us another stupid question of the day or some other Marquee schtick that sucks. I want to hear somebody rail on this team, and more importantly, the front office, because that’s what they deserve, although if someone broadcasting the games DID do this, I probably wouldn’t hear them for much longer after that. I just need to get back out to a game; maybe that will help me feel better… happy summer… thanks Cubs!
