It’s one of the best parts of June. Although this year did not bring us titles, June is still a championship month for us. Nine of the twelve Chicago championships in my lifetime happened in this month. It’s great to remember them as we turn the calendar each day.
June 9th was the first of these days. Seven years ago it brought us the first Blackhawks Stanley Cup in many of our lifetimes. I had just moved back from LA, and had an apartment in Ukranian Village. My brother and dad were over for game 6 vs the Flyers. We thought the game was over in regulation before a late Flyer goal. I almost punched a hole in the new sectional we had picked up on Milwaukee Ave. I was so pissed. Then I thought, what a way to win this would be; seeing that last goal go in and knowing it’s over. Can’t wait. And then it happened, and nobody knew it. My dad says he knew, but we didn’t start going nuts until we started realizing that Kane’s goal did slide into the back of the net. How sweet it was. The first is always the best.
And that’s what we remembered on June 12th. 26 years ago it was the Bulls first title. I wrote a whole series of blogs about that 1990-91 season. That Bulls championship taught us all about how the struggle was all worth it. All those years coming up short vs Detroit…and now, finally, we did it. I was 14 at the time, and was home for this inaugural party. It would be the first of many, in what became an annual summer party in Chicago in the 90s.
We have to fast forward to 1997, or 20 years ago for our next memorable championship date of June 13th. That date brought us the Bulls 5th title which was clinched when MJ found Kerr for the game winning jumper. That second set of titles I was out in the streets. I don’t remember where I was at this very moment, but I’m pretty sure it ended with me standing in traffic with Bulls horns on and a Corona in my hand. Ahh, let the party begin.

June 14th was a double dipper. 1992 and 1998 made that day extra memorable for us Chicagoans. 1998 was of course the final Bulls title; haven’t seen once since. I had that final MJ shot framed in my apartment for many years until it got knocked down during a drunk pre club nerf basketball game. But June 14th, 1992 may be the most memorable. Of course it was the best game I’d ever attended in person. To see that comeback…to see a title won in person…it can only be matched by another in person title experience.
And then there’s today: June 15th, 2015 was the last Hawks Cup. It was only two years ago, but it sure seems like a lot longer. Will that be the Hawks last Cup? I sure hope not.
Yes, that leaves 3 to go. Three more memorable June dates to go to remember our titles. I’ll be back with those three later this month. In the meantime, remember those days. Remember the parties, the parades, the championship gear, and the happiness that a sports title spreads throughout this city. We’ve been pretty lucky. But of course, we want more! We always want more. Maybe next June?

That first Bhawks Cup was great, and no better way to win it than an ot goal from Kane that few people knew was in.
The first Bulls title was a dominant effort that finally saw MJ and the Bulls come out on top after years of falling short.
The 97 title brought the flu game as well as a play set up b MJ and Kerr just as they drew it up. It was the 2nd time that the Bulls had won back to back, and they did not stop there either and time.
The 92 Bulls title was aWesome because we were there celebrating and watching the Bulls epic 4th quarter comeback led by the bench.
The 98 title was the 2nd 3 peat and last of the Bulls rings. MJ and the Bulls would stop malone, stockton, and the jazz once again. MJ hitting his iconic game winner leaving no doubt that he was and is the GOAT!
The 3rd Bhawks Cup this decade does seem too long ago. Time for them to get back there and do it again!
The Cubs did not win in June, but they are World Series Champs forever, no matter the month or year!
