June 15, 2016: Shedding Season

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

Don’t you hate that?  When your dog sheds everywhere…  there really doesn’t seem like there’s a “season” for it, since there is always a lot of hair to go around.  Brushing her could be an endless event.  But no, don’t worry, this isn’t about my dog.  It’s about our Blackhawks… and on Wednesday, shedding season began for them again.

This time it was Teuvo and Bickell.  How many ex-Hawks are floating around the league?  OK, let me rephrase that… How many GOOD ex-Hawks are around the league?  You look it up, but I know there’s a lot… too many.  It’s the curse of a great team in the salary cap era.  We’ve been through this before.

This year shouldn’t be too too bad.  Last year was brutal, just as bad as after the 2010 Cup.  This year shouldn’t be too bad.. yes, but the first two have already said good bye.  Let’s start with Teuvo.

My initial thought was, if we were going to trade Teuvo, we should have done it during the season to get a top defensemen for the postseason run this year.  Now I didn’t want to say goodbye to Teuvo, but if the Hawks wanted to, we could have done this earlier.  But then I thought… maybe they wanted to give him a chance to shine in the postseason.  Maybe that would have made the decision, or non-decision for them.  Well, he didn’t shine, and that’s what sealed his fate I believe.

Now to Bickell… a postseason hero, a regular season dud.  Who could forget everything he did in the postseason?  The Cup clincher against Boston… there was another series, can’t put my finger on it this second, where without him, we would have been screwed.  Was it the Wings that same year?  Anyways, he had some memorable postseason moments… ones that we won’t forget.  Problem was, he had very few memorable moments during the other 82 game season.  You know, the regular season.  He was non-existent at times… even sent down this year.  And again, my first thought, is we should have done this earlier.  I thought for sure he was gone last year… and I would have been fine with that.  I thought maybe if he went, we’d be able to keep Sharp or Saad.  But he didn’t, and we didn’t… but now, he’s gone.

The good thing, besides the draft picks, and the fact that they’re in Carolina, is that we’ve cleared up some dollars… hopefully for Shaw.  Yeah, he was undisciplined this year in the postseason, but he was also awesome.  Keep your head on straight, and keep grinding in the front of the net… we need guys like that.  Byfuglien comes to mind… and Brouwer… oh wait, screw him…haha.

So the Hawks restructuring begins.  We’ve already made a few acquisitions… some defensemen I believe… one that could start this year.  Got to brush up on my Hawks deals, but we have time.  I caught wind of this trade minutes after it hit Twitter.  It was surprising, but not too much.  I wasn’t heartbroken either… after all, it’s shedding season for our boys.  Who’s next?

Teuvo is only 21, but he has underperformed with all the time and chances he has been given. Yes, he is talented, but he is in no way untradeable, and that is just what the Hawks did. Bye bye bickell. You hooked up some great postseason games, but your incosistency is what sealed your fate. A big body like that to go along with skill and a great wrister should perform well at all times. Oh well, thanks for the time boys and goodluck with the canes. The Hawks will use those draft picks to build internally and try to find some young gems!

yes, tuevo didn’t score in the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing well. i would have liked to keep him and let bickell go. he just didn’t seem to have his head in hockey anymore. just seemed to be out there going thru the motions.
