June 14, 2017: Matching Threes

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

Hockey season is finally over by the way.  Although I cracked a smile at the result of the NBA Finals, I cringed at the end of the Stanley Cup.  The Penguins won again becoming repeat champions.  Over the past nine years, they have now matched our Blackhawks with three Stanley Cups, matching threes if you may.

The Blackhawks still lead overall against the Penguins: six to five in Stanley Cup winners.  This provides me some sort of satisfaction.  But the fact that the Penguins repeated, and we never did in this recent run, does bother me a bit.  This of course is missing from the whole dynasty discussion with this current Blackhawks team.  That damn Kings series; that has to be this team’s greatest regret.  I know I hate to think about that one.  There was our repeat year on a platter, which could have been a three peat considering we win both the year before and after it.  Woulda coulda shoulda I guess.

So now the Penguins are passing us as greatest team of this decade?  Well, their first cup of this run came in 2009, so technically, we have three this decade vs their two; still a clear cut Blackhawks winner.  But we still have two more years…who’s more likely to win another?

Papa Vegas has both teams the top favorites to win the cup in 2018.  Surely another Pens win would ice it; surely another Blackhawks win would ice it.  If neither win, I think we have that title.  But we want another title that actually matters, and that’s another Stanley Cup.

Back to the Penguins for a minute…  The fricking refs helped them out, eh?  I didn’t watch the series; I did see some highlights, like the instant whistle blow that negated a Preds goal in Game 6.  I’m sure there were plenty of others.  I knew the NHL would be leaning Pittsburgh’s way with the calls.  That little bastard Crosby; I really don’t like him.  Same goes for the Pens in general.

With their 5th Cup in 6 tries, they have the best winning percentage for teams that have been there more than twice.  And if you remember their first two Cups, that was a repeat too.  Worst of all, the second leg of that repeat coming against the Hawks via a sweep.  I was contemplating writing a Hate File on them.  If they were to beat us in the Cup, that would do it.  Although they were the team that hurt Toews that one year too; I may have enough already.

I think seeing them repeat when we didn’t bothers me the most. What are our chances of repeating now?  Sure, coming off a first round sweep this year, everybody is saying the window is closed; I don’t believe that.  But a repeat?  That’s hard enough as it is; that window may be closed.  But I would gladly take another Cup.

Good riddance to the 2016-2017 NHL season.  With the draft coming, the Vegas franchise draft, and the rumors of a big name from the Hawks leaving, we may be back with some Hawks Talk sooner than you think.  Until then, screw Crosby and the Penguins, and Go Hawks!  We still have them topped in the 2010s.

The pens winning back to back Cups sucks. I am not a crosby or penquin fan. I would love for the Bhawks to get a crack at them in next year’s finals. Stop their 3 peat nonsense…2 is enough. Seems like forever ago that the Bhawks were playing…definitely an extended vacation this year. Let’s hope everyone is enjoying and getting ready to get back to work in a few months. Some moves already made and probably more to come. The Bhawks window is not closed but that does not mean it is time to stand pat and do nothing. Shake things up. A big name gone? Could be ok. Still very talented, it is just that right mix of guys that is needed. Joel is not afraid to make moves on the ice, either. Looking forward to some Bhawks hockey and a chance for our 4th Cup this decade. Keep it warm for us pens…
