Here we sit on the eve of Game Six. Think about that… think about what Game 6 has meant over time. All the historic Game 6’s… will Monday night’s latest version be added to this list?
We’re not going to talk about losses in this specific game in a 7 game series, nor are we going to talk about this game taking place in a series other than the Finals. Right now it’s all about Game 6 wins on the biggest stage by OUR teams. Let us begin.
Let us begin by stating the obvious… that the Bears will never ever play in a Game 6. The Cubs won their 2 World Series titles at the beginning of time in 1907 & 1908 in 4 and 5 games respectively. The Sox have the first of these type of Game 6 victories…. actually the first 2. Obviously in 2005 it only took 4, but for the Sox first ever World Series titles, back in 1906 & 1917, the magic took place in Game 6. In 1906 the Sox beat the best team in baseball that year… the Cubs, yep that’s right… a Cubs Sox World Series. The Sox were victorious 8-3 in the clincher. In 1917, the Sox held that title of best regular season team as they knocked off the New York Giants 4-2. The clinching game happened in the Polo Grounds… as the game winning run was scored on a botched run down. The Giants were accused of doing it on purpose…and the player who “let the run score” was banned for life due to these accusations… that’s pretty classic.

Now we turn our attention to the Bulls. Out of the 6 Bulls championships, 5 of them were won in Game 6. The only other one, their first, was won in 5 games over the Lakers. Pretty amazing that they were never ever taken to a Game 7 on the biggest stage. But today is about 6. The comeback of 1992. The Bulls trailing big at home in the Stadium in this one, ran their bench guys and Pippen out to start the 4th. They led a furious rally, while MJ was waving his towel on the bench in support. He eventually was brought back in the game, and put the finishing touches on Portland, giving the Bulls their second title. In 1993, the stage shifted to Phoenix. The Bulls actually won the first two games of this series IN Phoenix… then dropped 2 of 3 at the Stadium, to send it back to Phoenix for another classic game. And no, it wasn’t MJ who hit the game winner. He DID score every other point in the 4th quarter for the Bulls in this one, and captured his 3rd straight Finals MVP as the Bulls celebrated their 3 peat. But it was John Paxson with the game winning trey. The assist on the play… Horace Grant, who also snuffed out Kevin Johnson’s game winning attempt directly after. In 1996, it was the Father’s Day game. It was MJ, in his first full year since his first retirement, hugging the ball and crying on the locker room floor, as he won his first title without his father present in the flesh. This win capped off the best season in NBA history, the 72-10 team which brought us the Bulls 4th title against Seattle. In 1997, it was the Jazz who were the lucky ones. In this series, it was actually Game 5 that is the best known.. the Flu Game. Yet, it was Game 6, where MJ again did not hit the game winner…. he assisted… to another Bulls PG, Steve Kerr, who buried the shot and brought us #5… the last one celebrated in the UC. 1998 was the last of the Bulls titles, and that Game 6 there was no question. MJs last shot as a Bull hit nothing but net, and ranks as his top moment ever, as the Bulls hoisted their 6th NBA trophy. Game 6 was very very good to the Bulls.
What about the Hawks? That’s where they’ve made their bones too. Yes, they won 2 Cups in 1934 and 1938, but both in 4 games… it was best of 5 those days. In 1961, it was none other than Game 6 that pops its head out. Detroit was the place, and Hull and Mikita were the duo… the two immortalized with statues outside the United Center, leading the way. It was a 5-1 blowout in Game 6 that brought the Hawks their 3rd cup. Now to this current Hawks team… who like Game 6 a lot too. It was in Philadelphia 5 years ago, where a late Flyer goal forced OT, and a goal was scored which none of us really knew that brought us glory. A goal scored by Patrick Kane… he knew… and the Cup was ours! The first one I’ve ever witnessed. Three years later in 2013, in Boston… the words “17 seconds” became forever etched in our brains. Enter it in your search… you’ll see what I mean… you know what I mean. A Bickell game tying goal followed up by a Bolland game winner 17 seconds later, and the Hawks were skating around in front of the Boston faithful with their 2nd Cup in 4 years, and 5th all time.
So Game Six…. you see what I mean? It’s brought many great memories. What will Monday night hold? The Blackhawks are here in this Game 6 again. They’re here in this spot again, with the chance to raise the Cup at their fingertips. It’s soooo close. 60 minutes away…. one… more… win…. and another Game 6 will be remembered in Chicago history. I’m ready… you ready? Let’s go!
