Saturday night’s all right.  It was another big time win for the Blackhawks, as they took down the Lightning in Game 5 bringing us one win from our 3rd Cup in 6 years.

I was able to watch the entire game… which has been a rarity as of late.  It started off great.  There were 2 plays in that first period that will never be forgotten.  The first was when Crawford, in an attempt to clear the puck, passed it right to Kucharov, one of Tampa’s best players.  What looked to be a disaster, turned out to be a game turner.  Crawford dove back in goal to save the shot, but that was only half the story.  As he dove back in, and as Kucharov skated into the crease, the Lightning player crashed into the post.  That was his last play of the game, and maybe the series.  So we avoided disaster and knocked out one of their best players in one fell swoop… a most fortuitous play for us.  I was feeling pretty good after that, knowing it’s always good to have some breaks go your way, and then the 2nd key play happened…

What could go down as one of the biggest blunders of all time in NHL history, Bishop and Hedman skated into each other as they both tried to get to the puck.  They both crashed down on the ice, as the puck squirted away.  Tough luck Sharp picked it up and skated towards an empty net.  He flipped it in for one of the easiest goals of his career.  It’s bad enough if this happens in any game, let alone Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.  I was loving this play to the max.  Hedman, their best defender, a guy who has to be given credit for Kane’s offensive output this series was part of this folly.  Then there’s Bishop…  I actually watched a little pre-game, and here we go with the goalie drama again.  Please raise your hand if you’re sick of it.  I don’t give a crap who was in goal…  Actually, I’d PREFER Bishop in goal over this unknown Russian rookie.  Bishop is not 100%, regardless of the games that they’re playing, and I’m sure the truth will come out when the series is over, either making him look like a hero in victory, or creating an excuse for defeat.  The whole thing is ridiculous…  So for that to happen to him… I couldn’t be happier.  It was an awesome play… one we’ll never forget, especially if we can get one more…

One more is all it will take…  82 games later, 15 playoff wins later, the Hawks sit on the brink.  I bet those Game 6 tickets went through the roof after the win was recorded… as if they weren’t high enough already.  To witness a championship in person is the ultimate for a fan, although most of us won’t ever get that chance.  I was lucky enough to witness one… the 1992 Bulls title.  I’ve documented that as it ranks #1 on my list of best games I’ve attended.  In my lifetime, there has only been 3 Chicago titles won IN Chicago.  The 1992 Bulls was the first, followed by the 1996 Bulls, and the last of this sort… the 1997 Bulls.  The other half of the Bulls titles were won in LA, Phoenix, and Utah.  The Bears obviously won in New Orleans in 1986, the Sox won in Houston in 2005, and the Hawks in Philly in 2010 and Boston in 2013.  The Cubs…. one day.  So as the Hawks come home, and get ready for Game 6, the excitement is at an all time high.  This could be the first time ever that the Hawks skate around the UC with the Cup.

They have won at home before, but before most of our times.  In 1961, the last Cup before these Hawks, they won in Detroit.  You have to go back to the 2 Cups in 1934 and 1938,,,  They won both of those in the old Chicago Stadium.  There were a total of 3 championships won there… these 2 Hawk Cups in the 1930s, and the Bulls title in 1992.  If the Hawks were able to pull it off Monday night, this would be the 3rd championship celebrated in the United Center.

It would be the 6th all time Cup for the Blackhawks… equaling the total of their roommates in the UC.  This would most certainly make the word “dynasty” to describe this group valid.  Sitting on the brink of history, the Hawks have to dig deep one last time.  One more win is all it will take to cause this city to lose its  mind again.  Good luck boys… see you Monday night.
