June 12, 2021: Just Knew

Sometimes, you have that feeling… you just know that the Cubs are going to win. Friday afternoon at Wrigley against the Cardinals, the first game since 2019 where Wrigley was at 100% capacity, an absolute perfect day, blue skies, feeling like summer… there was no way the Cubs were NOT going to win this game. It feels good to be right sometimes…

It was already a great day. It started at 530 in the morning. My son, who has been “sleeping in” during the week, getting up a little bit later than normal, just in enough time to watch 15 minutes of TV before eating cereal and getting ready for school; yes, he is… was still in school. Friday was his last day, and his internal clock must have told him so. He popped up bright and early; we proceeded to tell Alexa to play School’s Out For Summer… you just knew it was going to be a good day. Once he got to school, it would be his last day in 3rd grade; big deal, right? Well, this year… the year of the pandemic, the year when most kids did remote learning, was a bit more special than others. Thankfully the Archdiocese of Chicago had their own rules; thankfully the Catholic school we send him to decided to proceed with caution with in-person learning. My son had perfect attendance this year… THIS year! He was in school every single day; so thankful for that. Of course, I need to give my wife a quick shout out for this… doing everything in her power to ensure that he made it through this year healthy… making sure we all did. It wasn’t easy… trying to NOT do things, trying to lay low, trying to follow all the rules out there… thanks babe, and congrats to my boy for making it to 4th grade. Was it a coincidence that this Friday, his last day of school, was the first day Chicago went full capacity?

Yeah, he got out early… which meant I was leaving work early to pick him up with my wife today… lots of people at pickup today. My wife made him an eye doctor appointment after school today. As we checked in, we sat in the waiting area, the Cubs game entered the bottom of the 6th inning. My son likes to watch the game on ESPN game cast, which is precisely what we did; Anthony Rizzo was at the plate. He held the phone away from me, and was asking me to guess what the next pitch was going to be… he would tell me what the next pitch was, trying to trick me. As the next pitch really recorded, he would say foul ball… then another… then another… then another?!?! No way. They came and called his name. I took the phone from him as we walked to the back. As they had him look through this machine, the Rizzo AB went to its 14th pitch… 14, Mr. Cub Ernie Banks… I think you know what happened on that pitch. The girl was trying to tell my son what to do, and I’m whispering to him…. Rizzo hit a home run!!! As we walked past the room where my wife was at, I peeked my head in… Rizzo hit a home run! Simply magical… I just got done watching the replay this morning… fans on their feet before he hit it… ball flies out of there… tears in my eyes. What a moment… the Cubs are back!!! The summer is officially here!!!

Of course, that home run tied the game, and the Cubs, as I knew they would, came back from that 5-1 deficit to beat the Cardinals on this day, 8-5… 85… Bears… Justin Fields was in the crowd with a Cubs hat on… just saying… How do you top this one? Well, how about winning the series against the Cardinals? How about sweeping them? Well, somebody just may have to check the ticket prices for the last 2 games of the series… GO CUBS!!!
