June 12, 2015: Philosophies

The MLB draft was this week. Did you know?

The Cubs and Sox both had top 10 picks. More young talent coming on both sides of town. It’s funny the difference a year makes for the Cubs. Last year it was all about the draft.  The minor league teams and prospects were focused on more than the major league team. It’s just another sign that the gears have been shifted.  The concentration is back where it should be. Let’s hope it stays there for a while.

As far as drafting philosophies, it seems the Cubs and Sox have a different approach.  The Cubs take their best player available, and it has been position players…at least with their first pick. The Sox meanwhile appear to be drafting for need. This year the Sox grabbed a right handed starting pitcher; definitely a need. A guy from the same town as Chris Sale. If he can be half as good, they’ve done well.  Last year, it was Rodon and he’s already in the rotation.

The last two years it’s been the Sox picking right ahead of the Cubs. I wonder if the guys the Sox took were number one on the Cubs list. Not sure about this year, but last year I would have bet the Cubs would have snatched Rodon in a heartbeat had the Sox passed him. Or would they have?

It seems the Cubs strategy is focused towards position players in the draft. Building the young talent in that area, while worrying about premium pitching another route.  Lester is the example from this year. Yeah, he hasn’t lived up to the billing yet, but the Cubs paid premium for an A starter. Next year it may be David Price. So stockpile the positions and sign big time arms.

The Sox had one of their best offseasons with the moves they made. Yeah, that hasn’t panned out yet, but the front office did all they could, and it still may pan out this year.

Whatever the philosophy, it’s great to be talking baseball. It’s great to have some hope. Where we’ll sit 4 months from now, who knows, but we’re back in the game, and that’s half the battle.

Both approaches work in their own way. Soxs drafting pitching is always a good thing. Fulmer is a good pickup and should pay be major league ready in about 2 years.

For the Cubs, Happ has good power and a strong arm. Should make a decent OF or trade bait.

Steal of the draft this year is Tyler Stephenson, by the REDs. A good hitting power catcher is hard to come by now a days.
