June 11, 2024: Long Summer

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

It’s well known how bad the Sox are… I mean, they are BAD with a capital B, A, D. That makes it a long summer for Sox fans. But guess what? Us Cubs fans are right there with you. Sure, we’re not as bad of a team, but man… it’s been tough sledding lately, and with only Jed’s promise of “things will get better”, this summer could be a real long one…

Our newly acquired bullpen arm from the offseason and 2nd closer of the year Hector Neris blew the game on Tuesday night in Tampa Bay, giving up a 3 run walk off home run. That was fun. But… it would help if the team could score more than 2 runs… They’ve won 14 games since May 1st; not good. They’ve lost 23. In those 23 losses… 67 runs total. That’s less than 3 runs per game; again, not good. 11 times they have scored 2 runs or less. The offense has absolutely been sucking, and the pitching… well, Assad and Imanaga have had their moments; they haven’t been as lights out as before, but still very good. Steele has yet to get going. The bullpen? Forget about it. Where do we go from here?

Well, I hate to beat a dead horse… I say that, but maybe I do like beating dead horses. Not like animal cruelty or anything like that, but… I’ve been waiting for the Cubs to do something to this roster for a couple years now, and honestly, since the blow up of the 2016 team. I didn’t agree with it at the time; why completely trash a roster that’s been making the playoffs on a regular basis? Anyways, fine, they did it, ok… now what? How are you going to get the roster back to this point? I’m still waiting. The last 2 offseasons have been borderline pathetic. The Cubs are moving at a turtle’s pace while everyone around us gets better. Cubs are tied for last in the division, although they are only a half game out of 2nd… riddle me that. The NL central isn’t that good btw…. and for that matter, the whole National League. This division is wide open. The Brewers have a nice lead, sure, but who else will step up? Unfortunately, I don’t think the Cubs will.

So… can’t turn back time and sign some more studs, like we should have. What are we waiting for? Oh yeah, we were waiting for the Ohtani sweepstakes; ha! Now we’re waiting for??? We’re back to the spot where we don’t want to spend money; did Counsell get fooled too? Looking at his old team in first place, Craig has more money in his pocket, sure, but surely he thought he’d have an improved roster due to the deep pockets of the Cubs… gotcha! Got us too.

Long season, and I’ll try to stay positive. The fact that I haven’t been to a game yet is bugging me… will get there soon; maybe THAT will turn it around? 3 games under 500 and counting. Go Cubs!
