Friday night brought us something we should have never seen. We avoided it the first 19 games of his career, when Anthony Rizzo was playing for the Padres; it wouldn’t have mattered back then. It does matter now. It was the Cubs vs Rizzo for the first time ever on Friday night in the Bronx; not nearly the same as it would have been if the venue was Wrigley, but still… it should have never happened…
I hate to beat a dead horse; wait I already did that in the last blog with Tony LaRussa… I’m still upset. I’m still pissed that the Cubs traded away every great player they had; oh wait, we still do have Contreras… for now. I don’t care that Baez is struggling big time; I don’t care that Kris Bryant is on the IL. I don’t care that Rizzo’s not batting his weight. Bottom line is that there was no need to get rid of them; at the very least, there was no reason to get rid of ALL of them. If we were talking about the guy with the brightest future, the best years left ahead of him, that would have been the last guy we traded, Kris Bryant. If we were talking about the leader of this team, the guy who should have never, ever wore another uniform in his career, we’re talking about the first guy that went, Anthony Rizzo.
Look, I don’t want to go down memory lane, well, I always want to go down memory lane, but I feel like it’s just going to piss me off more. I don’t have to remind everyone of what Rizzo meant to the Cubs; I guess I did have to remind one person, name rhymes with Dicketts. You would think that Tommy boy WOULD realize how important Rizzo was to the Cubs, I mean, who handed you that World Series ball you piece of shit? It was Rizzo, of course, who stuffed that ball in his back pocket after catching the last out from KB, and presented it to you at the rally; did you forget that Tom? What have you done for me lately I guess it’s what it’s all about; money is what it’s all about. Forget about the World Series title; forget about the golden years, where the Cubs made the playoffs more times than any other time. Seriously… still pisses me off.
I may feel better if the Cubs had brought in Freeman to replace Rizzo; it still would hurt, seeing Rizzo in another uniform. I’ll always root for him; I’ll never forget him. His poster still hangs in my son’s room; it probably won’t go back up after I paint. His jersey still hangs in my son’s closet; I’ll keep that even after it doesn’t fit him any longer. The stuff he did on the field, the stuff he did off the field, the championship that he helped the Cubs capture for the first time in my life… priceless. Yet, here we sit… watching Rizzo in another uniform… hitting more dingers thus far than anybody currently in a Cubs uniform… giving me a reason to root for the Yankees… F me…
I’ve been upset about many trades over the years; maybe I need to make a list (ALERT: Future Blog Idea). Anthony Rizzo would be near the top, if not AT the top of this list. Maybe seeing him play against the Cubs finally will help provide closure to this whole thing… maybe not. Honestly, it just pissed me off all over again. That wound that had been trying to heal has been ripped back open. You bastards… you heartless bastards…
