June 10, 2018: Starting To Feel It

posted in: Cubs | 2

Have you been paying attention?  The Cubs are playing some pretty good baseball.  Yes, they ended the homestand with a loss on Sunday vs the Pirates, but still only sit a half game back before making their way across the border to play the first place Brewers.

Hey, give them credit.  They’ve played great baseball so far.  I’m surprised they’ve lasted this long.  They are currently the best team record wise in the National League.  That would make the Cubs the second best.  Winning seven out of eight thus far vs this best team record wise tells me all I need to know.  The Brewers are bound to win some games against us right?

The Cubs have been doing it with great pitching, great defense, and some big hits.  That’s a pretty good formula.  Lester is leading the charge with the starters.  Hendricks has been OK, as has Quintana.  Montgomery has shined in his starts, while Chatwood has struggled.  Darvish is still MIA/TBD at this point.  Yeah, I’m starting to feel it with this Cubs team, but I have to think that Darvish has to be big for us before it’s all said and done, even it is as a number four starter.

The defense, yeah, it’s back.  Almora and Baez have been the early season standouts, but they’re not alone.  Rizzo and Bryant are solid at the corners, Heyward has been better, and Schwarber has even been decent.  But how about that game from Happ the other day?  We practiced that Friday, and my son kept wanting to be Ian Happ as I threw him pop ups to dive and catch.  Awesome plays!  The return of Russell hasn’t paid off at the dish yet, but his defense can almost always be counted on.

Then the big hits.  Let’s start with the biggest: the Heyward walk off grand slam.  Wow!  My wife and I were watching on the couch as he turned that 98 mph fastball around.  It was a no doubter.   Heyward has been better, yes?  Yeah, I’m still a bit skeptical, but he’s seeing the ball really well now.  The Chili Davis effect?

The Cubs have got some other timely hits, and sometimes not even hits.  It seems like they’re scoring the dirty runs.   Moving guys over, hitting sac flys, etc.  Yes, I do feel like the offense has to be more consistent.  They’ve had their outbursts, and some better timely hitting lately, but there are still too many stretches of nothingness for my liking.

Hey, I’m just trying to justify this feeling.  Unlike last year, I’m starting to feel it this year.  I’m starting to think this could be the second World Series team.  As I look at the AL and the Yanks and Red Sox, and of course the Astros, I know only one of them will be there.  And yes, the NL teams are getting better…the Dodgers, the Nats…nothing will be easy.  But… I’m starting to feel the confidence grow.

Next up, is taking first place and not looking back.  Take care of business against Milwaukee like we’ve done so far, and keep winning series after series.  I know who the best team in the NL is.  Now let’s make it official.  Go Cubs!

    I’m back! Finally!

The Cubs are, too! They have been playing great baseball and are now headed to Wrigley north in a battle for first place. The Cubs are playing a whole lot better than the first half of last year. The brewcrew is in first for now, but I seem to remember them having a 5.5 game lead at the break last year, too. Time to put them in their place!

The pitching and defense has been solid. The hitting a bit inconsistent. The JHey grand salami was aWesome! So were Happy’s 3 great catches, especially the one to end the game! The Cubs will need Yu at some point so just get and stay healthy, not to mentiom getting his weak minded head a bit stronger! All in all, looking forward to taking first place from the brewcrew and keeping it all summer long!

    GO CUBS GO!!!
