It took a while, but we finally got there.. no thanks to the Diamondbacks and their losing streak of forever… but the Dodgers out of all teams. By beating the Cardinals last night, the Cubs took sole possession of first place. Today is June 1st. The Cubs are in first on the first.
It’s nice to get help from other teams. As I’ve said previously, I know how to accept a favor; I’m not particularly a big guy to ask for favors, but… if they’re thrown my way, I’m not going to say no. So yes, go Dodgers this week vs the Cardinals, just like it was go White Sox the other week. Remember, it’s the Cubs and anybody playing the Cardinals. It’s about time they’re out of first place. They ain’t shit. Now if you merged the Cardinals and Brewers, you’d have something… but each on their own… not impressed. They have their impressive pieces, but certainly nothing to make them a complete team… after about a third of the way into the season, nothing to make me think that the Cubs cannot win this division. That being said, I certainly don’t think the Cubs should rest on their laurels…
It’s been pretty cool how hot the Cubs have been especially considering all the injuries we’ve endured along the way. Each team will have to deal with them… nobody is going to feel sorry for you. The Cubs have kind of had that next man up approach, whether it’s another arm in the bullpen coming in and throwing well, or another bat getting a big hit, like most recently Patrick Wisdom. It’s nice to see some depth on this team. This depth certainly helps over 162… it can also come in handy come trade deadline time. Who on this Cubs roster should be moved to help our chances of winning THIS year?

Seriously though… nobody in their right minds would think the Cubs fit that bill, again, after watching the majors this first third of the year. If anything, adding a piece or two could really propel this team. You know I’ve been wanting a left handed starting pitcher, and considering the Orioles recent performance, and harnessing that positive past trade experience with them, I see no reason why John Means shouldn’t be wearing a Cubs uniform later this year. I’m sure there are others, I had mentioned a few before, but I really think he is the guy to get. But back to the question… who do we have to give up?
Taking into consideration all the extensions that the Cubs have to get done, and yes, they better damn well get them done, there are other guys who normally we may not want to trade that become expendable. I’m not talking KB, Javy, Rizzo, or Contreras… but after that, anybody on offense right? OK, maybe not Nico. That leaves Ian Happ as the most attractive trade piece, no? Ian Happ for John Means is probably not fair for the Orioles, but… who knows how much Happ can get us on the open market. A switch hitting, young outfielder… makes me want to keep him, but… adding a young left handed starter, being able to extend him… that makes me feel a bit better, especially when thinking about THIS year. I’m not sure the Cubs can get it done with our current starting rotation… in fact, I’m pretty sure we won’t.
So… Jed, I know you’re on the phones already right? Get on it, and do what you can to improve this ballclub… NOW. With the fans back in Wrigley, with the way they’ve been playing… you can sort of start to feel it again. With more fans being welcomed in as the season progresses… a packed Wrigley come September when the Cubs are playing meaningful games… priceless I say. I’m going to enjoy our seat atop the division today, but I want more… Get it done… Go Cubs!!!
