I post every day. Typically, I try to write in the morning the day of before work, or the night before, before I go to sleep. Sometimes I’ll write the night of. Sometimes I’ll double up, and write the night of, then the next morning all at once. On rare occasions, I’ll write one in advance. Even rarer, are those that I write after the day. This is the second of those type of posts. We’ll call this the Late Edition.
Remember when our teams would play on the west coast, and you get the paper the next morning, and the final score would not be in there? I do. I loved reading the paper, more specifically, the Sun Times. I would have it with my bowl or bowls of cereal each morning. Of course, I would never start at the front of the paper. Flip it over, and on the back page began the sports section; it still does. I loved reading the box scores. During football season back in the day, that is how we kept track in our fantasy league, so those numbers in small print for each game really meant a lot. During baseball season, I went through the box scores as well. I also liked the league leaders. I would follow those closely, seeing which players led the league in HRs, RBIs, runs, SBs, wins, ERA, and strikeouts. Another part of the sports section that I enjoyed was the “on this day in sports history”. I always thought that was cool. It was especially cool when it was something Chicago that we were looking back on. I liked reading specific writers too. For some reason, I can’t think of many right now, but I did like reading Jay Mariotti more recently. Yeah, he was a jerk, but that’s what made his stuff great. You either agreed 110% and loved what he wrote, or were totally against it, and hated it. He was definitely the polarizing figure that I’m sure brought many readers to the paper.
Things have changed over time, but things have stayed the same. There is no need for a late edition anymore, and for that matter, the paper in general. Everything is online. I get up to date scores, and scour over the box scores on my phone or iPad. In the morning, with my bowl of cereal, I’m either writing my blog, or checking my fantasy lineup. This type of stuff is constant nowadays. We don’t have to wait for any news. Everything is at our finger tips at all times, any times that are convenient to us. It’s one of my favorite things to do when sitting in “my office”. Staying up to date with the latest Chicago sports news is important. I’d probably do better at that if I was on Twitter, but I’m not; I do get updates via Twitter from my wife though. Still, I do miss reading the paper…

My wife keeps saying we should get a subscription, and no, not for the great articles or sports section, for the coupons. I’m not sure why we haven’t done that yet… that was probably something I was supposed to do, that I haven’t done yet; that sounds about right. That whole feature “on this day in sports history” is something I’d love to continue to read, except even that’s online now. You can find websites that tell you that information. I even enjoy writing about that here sometimes… There is no more Jay Mariotti type writer anymore. Sitting in a barber shop the other day, I got to read some Joe Cowley… what a treat. I’m being sarcastic of course; he’s a complete tool. I feel that way about a lot of stuff I read. Maybe that’s because I write now, and I feel my stuff is better than a lot that I read out there. I do find stuff that I like, and maybe I’m biased, but there is some real crap being written out there today. But maybe this writing stuff is becoming a thing of the past… unless of course it’s 150 words or less.
Nevertheless, I will continue, because I enjoy it. It started as therapy, and continues to be so, especially now, even though it becomes tougher and tougher to keep up with. We’ll keep it coming for now. Of course, as always, there is plenty to talk about. Although I think I will go ahead and get that subscription to the Sun Times… hopefully we’ll have one of those editions soon that I can frame…. like all the 90s Bulls championships newspapers that are sitting at my parents house. One day, those will be hanging in my man cave… or office… or both. I don’t think you can frame a webpage… yet.
