July 8, 2021: It Does Strike Twice

The NHL season is now officially over. The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals 4-1. Congrats to them… I guess.

The Lightning have won their 3rd Stanley Cup in their 29th season of existence; not too shabby. Tampa Bay doesn’t really bother me; the Blackhawks handed them their only loss in the Stanley Cup Finals back in 2015, which was also the last year a team won on their home ice. However, now that the Lightning has struck twice, and has repeated, now… I have a problem with them.

Besides the fact that their Cup winning frequency is too high, the fact that they repeated, which is something the Blackhawks never did during their “dynasty”, pisses me off. I guess it pisses me off that the Hawks never repeated; damn 2014 Western Conference Finals… If we could have dug all the way out of that hole and pulled Game 7, we would have taken the Cup no problem. A repeat championship would have put a nice bow on the dynasty. Not saying 3 Cups in 6 years ISN’T a dynasty, but I’m just saying…

Repeating is not an easy thing to do, or is it? There have been 17 repeat Stanley Cup Champions since the WHL folded and the NHL was left standing in 1927. That seems like a lot. In fact, 90 years ago, was the first repeat champion, the losing team in this year’s finals, the Canadiens. They’ve done it 5 times all in all, and have a total of 24 Cups… so although they haven’t won one since 1993, kind of hard to feel sorry for them. The last team to repeat was the Penguins in 2016 & 2017; they also did it in 1991 & 1992, victimizing the Hawks in the 2nd one. There were instances of more than just repeat champions too. Of course, Montreal holds the record for most consecutive Cups with 5 from 1956-1960. They also had 4 straight from 1976-1979, while the Islanders directly followed that run with 4 straight of their own from 1980-1983. Two Stanley Cup winners in 8 years!?! Finally, there’s the Maple Leafs who turned in two 3 peats, from 1947-1949 & 1962-1964 respectively. Will the Lightning be the next franchise to 3 peat??? That would certainly make me hate them…

I guess I should be enjoying greatness, instead of hating on it. Why do I always have to compare other teams’ accomplishments to the accomplishments of my teams? Can’t I just enjoy history like any other normal person? Short answer is no. I mean, this repeat is a little shady, no? With the COVID Cup last year being the first of the duo… But hey, it’s not Tampa Bay’s fault, just like it isn’t a pitcher’s fault if they throw a no hitter in an MLB dictated 7 inning double header game. The Lightning just abided by the rules of the NHL playoffs that year, and did it better than anybody, so nah… I was trying, but can’t really knock that. I guess they can be classified as a repeat champ without an asterisk… haha.

I did finally tune in to the last 5 minutes of Game 5. Seeing the Lightning up by a goal, on the verge of winning the Cup on their home ice, I figured it would be cool to watch, and show my son. It was OK… don’t really get any enjoyment from watching another team celebrate, but it IS part of history, whether I like it or not. Chicago teams can’t win titles in every sport every year after all… that would be nice, but… hey, I’ll just settle for the next one, soon, as long as it isn’t the Sox… haha.
