July 8, 2016: The Dog Days

It has been rough.  Our mighty Cubs have come back to the rest of the majors, and have been struggling mightily lately.  When is the All Star break?

Thankfully, we only have 3 games to go.  Another tough loss last night against Atlanta.  This after a series loss to the woeful Reds.  This was one of those weeks that looked good on paper.  It was a time to get right before the break.  Best plans don’t always work out.

Let’s get something straight though:  the Cubs are not a bad team.  They are going through a bad stretch… most teams do.  Maybe we thought this Cubs team was above that.  We started looking at that record start, and started thinking record season.  I know I did.  We read all this stuff about run differential.  We still have the best in the league, but don’t think that holds much weight.  We just lost a series, and last night, to the 2 worst run differential teams in the majors.

When it comes down to it, the Cubs will have to win these low scoring, one run ball games.  There’s not going to be many blowouts come October.  We still are tracking there.

8 games up on St. Louis in the NL Central is still the biggest lead in the majors.  The Giants have surpassed us for best record… by 1 game.  The Cubs are playing like crap, and they are still in very good position… for now.

We still have those 3 games to go until the break, and it’s against the red-hot Pirates… in Pittsburgh.  Now we have owned them… Jake has owned them, and he will start the series tonight, but we’ve been going opposite directions.  Pittsburgh has made up 7 games in this stretch, and now only sits 8.5 games back… directly behind the Cardinals.  A series loss won’t be the end of the world, but a sweep?  My how the thinking has changed.

The concern is coming out.  We would march into a series and think sweep our way.  Lately, it’s been a concern the other way.  The Mets pounded us.  The Marlins took 3 out of 4.  The Reds finally showed they had major league ability by taking a series from us; we owned them too.  10-3 still isn’t bad for the year against those Reds.  Is it the Pirates turn to fight back?

We have the right guy on the mound.  We need him to be that guy again.  We need to get this first W in PNC.

We’ve been living through the dog days right now.  As Maddon says, and we should know, it happens to every team.  Although I was thinking 110 wins or more at one point, I do understand every team goes through their crap.  Actually seeing it happen… actually living through these tough losses… sucks.  I chalk it up to regular season slumps, which is fine.  We can’t have a postseason slump… that’s the first place my head goes.

But, let’s just get to the break.  3 games to go.  Let’s scrap out a win or two… or three.  But at this point, I really would be happy with just one.  I just want to get to the break, and get ready for that 2nd half.  Let’s push through the dog days, and get back to where we need to be.  I’m ready for it.  Go Cubs.

Struggling, check. Badly, check. Banged up, check. Need a break, check.
The 2016 Cubs that started so hot are glad they did because the early summer games are bringing them back to earth, quickly. The good thing is that the huge gap they opened up afforded them this slide because the Cubs are and will be on top of the nl central at the break. Yes, they are making it close again, but how much more can we ask at the break? Get there, get healthy, and get back to playing good baseball after the break. GO CUBS GO!!!
