Do you remember those books when you were a kid? They asked you all types of stuff, like find the differences between the 2 pictures, find the pattern of objects, etc, etc… I think it may have been those Highlights magazines; my son had those too. Those were fun, both as a kid, from what I remember, to an adult, showing them to my son. Now here I sit, all these years later, trying to figure out the same thing, only this time, it’s for sports betting.
I feel like I’m writing about once a week on this topic; yes, my Draft Kings account is still kicking. It’s not easy picking winners; it feels like it should be easier. I mean, take just one game, one game… and pick who is going to win; easy no? Well, like for the season we’re in, baseball, you have to take into account the odds; do you want to lay $250 to win $100, or whatever dollar amounts you choose? I never like putting my money on favorites, but maybe that needs to change. You see, I’m been trying to find the pattern lately with MLB betting.
First off, let me say: you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. Meaning, there is no one pattern to go all in on; you have to look at a number of things. However, when you combine them all, you may discover some solid plays. There is so much information to consider, and since I don’t want to spend too much time on all of this, I need to pick and choose where I look. Maybe that’s part of the problem? Maybe I need to spend MORE time on this? Maybe this CAN be a nice little side gig for me? We’ll see. For now though, I have a couple things.
I’ve been tracking the odds for each game, the % people bet on each team on Draft Kings, and the final scores; it only takes me a few minutes to enter that info into a spreadsheet. I’ve only been doing this for about a week, but I have seen some patterns emerging. Obviously the larger the sample size, the better, so still a little early, but… if I liked a game to begin with AND it falls in a favorable pattern AND I like the batter-pitcher matchups that I check daily too, then that should be a play. You see, you need to check multiple boxes before you fire, not just off the top. Although, there is no guarantee that will work either. Just like the NFL pool we run at work, where we pick winners, there are many folks who know little about football that pick more winners than those of us who think we know a little something; funny how that works.
There has to be something though; you have to have a system when you’re placing your bets. Maybe you like big home dogs; maybe you like playing big point totals on divisional games. I can go on and on and on… But when you get down to placing that bet, take as many factors into consideration as possible. If the arrow is pointing to one team on many of these levels, then… go opposite… haha. I love the “go oppo” strategy because Vegas wasn’t built on winners, but it’s not that easy, so… get a system; I’ll keep working on mine. Good luck!
